Takayna (Tarkine) is Australia’s largest temperate rainforest. Situated on Tasmania’s west coast it gets hit directly by the winds of the roaring forties, which results in some of the cleanest air in the world. There are animals, plants and fungi that leave here that can’t be found anywhere else on the planet (as well as plenty of incredible species that can). It is a true treasure of Tasmania and Australia.
And, yet, it is constantly under threat from archaic industries. Native forest logging and old growth logging continue here. There are mines pillaging the forest and blowing up mountains smack bang in the middle. Australia’s federal environment minister, , approved an expansion of one of them recently, she ran on a promise of “no new extinctions”.
This whole area should be protected, industry in the Takayna/ Tarkine region should be shut down. It should be treasured for the natural wonder of the world that it is.
Politicians need to get out of industry’s pocket and step up for their children.

PS - you could just swap all the references to Tassie names with Canadian names and this long winded caption would still be highly relevant.

Tasman Island is more or less at the edge of the Earth. Flat Earthers would probably say it is way around the corner!
Apparently, back in the day, it was common for lighthouse keepers and their families to have their teeth pulled before heading out for the job. Better to have no teeth than get an infection.
Now, I am pretty anti social but these seem like rather extreme lengths to go to to avoid people altogether!

Surreal! That’s what it was standing on a beach, alone, in Tasmania with nothing but ocean between me and Antarctica as the twilight wanes and a visible aurora visibly dances in the sky above.

Maybe you can think of a better word but surreal comes to mind for me.

Here is the 7 billionth shot you have seen of the Aurora from last night.
I never thought I would see it dance and perform in Tassie like it did last night. For most of the night, I was alone on this beach. Just me staring out to sea, straight at Antarctica under a dancing sky.
A half decent night I reckon.
