Standing at Bay and Front beside Union Station, Royal Bank Plaza gets its bronze-gold colour from a thin coating of real 24-karat gold. A reported 71 kilograms are spread across more than 14,000 windows in its two towers, completed in 1976 and 1979. The coating also serves a practical purpose: improving insulation and reducing heating costs.

For perspective, that same quantity of gold would have been worth approximately $281,000 at 1976’s average gold price. Today’s estimate uses the October 18, 2026 gold price in Canadian dollars and reflects the metal alone—not installation or recovery costs.

The turnout marks a significant increase from approximately 130,000 advance votes in the 2023 mayoral byelection and 116,000 in the 2022 municipal election.⁠

Jeff Warner hauled the heaviest pumpkin to this year’s Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, and still went home without the top prize.

The giant pumpkin grower from Englehart, Ont., knew his pumpkin had a soft spot before he left. He brought it anyway to show off what he’d grown. But the competition has strict rules about the condition of entries, and by the time it was judged, the spot had grown big enough to get it disqualified.

From pumpkin weigh-offs to fall fairs, harvest season is when small towns across Canada come out to celebrate together.
