More pictures of Neil Harris' performance from the Nelson Air Show yesterday (Sept. 19). I understand he's flying a Giles G-200.

The pictures would have been easier with a tripod equipped with a gimbal, but that wasn't happening. I was standing behind a chain link fence that was taller than my tripod, although I could shoot over it as long as the plane wasn't too close to the runway. Also, I don't own a gimbal.

Full-frame mirrorless, 180-800mm zoom used at various focal lengths. Handheld, no tripod, no gimbal.

Processed from raw with NX Studio, crops, minor corrections, and watermarks done with Photoslop Elements. All images reduced in resolution for online use.

In a break from my usual nature stuff, I went to the air show in Nelson, British Columbia, today (Saturday, September 19). These are a few photographs of the aerobatics by Neil Harris at the show.

This is the first time I've attempted to photograph airplanes with a heavy telephoto lens. At 200mm, the plane wasn't big enough. At 600, I had difficulty moving smoothly with the plane. It takes practice. Also, I'm clumsy enough so that I jerk the lens around so much that I needed higher shutter speeds than I might have expected. A learning experience. Handheld, no gimbal.

Cloud formations over Slocan Lake on September 15. I'm not sure I see any ghost riders, though. Maybe I just don't have enough imagination.

Burton Flats.

A few photos on or near Burton Flats, Burton, BC, on Arrow Lake south of Nakusp. Caribou Creek flows into Arrow Lake at Burton Flats. The landlocked kokanee salmon have started to run, so eagles and ospreys have begun to appear near the mouth of Caribou Creek.

There is a walking trail through Burton Flats that is quite pleasant, but it's not right at the mouth of the creek. The birds, of course, congregate around the mouth of the creek where the fish are. There will probably be more fish in a week or three, and more birds hunting them.

I left a bee picture out of my last post, so here it is, with a couple more flowers so the post has more than just one picture. (I read somewhere that the FB algorithms favor posts with more than one picture. Don't know if it's true.)

Just a few local scenes. Click on the individual pictures for more information about each picture, including settings.

Nothing fancy in any of these. No masks, filters, or fancy processing. The only extra layers come from adding the copyright and signature, which is then flattened to make a jpeg for posting. The resolution is always reduced for posting.

Thanks for looking! The infamous FB algorithm apparently doesn't distribute my posts very far, so I'm always happy to see reactions. You can even tell me if you think they're mediocre or boring.

Smoky in Salmo, British Columbia again this morning (August 7). Photos taken at 8:55am.

These are the same image. One is just a crop of the other. Note the spider webs in the trees, including one that looks like it goes right into the sun.

Z6iii, 180-600@430mm, f/22, 1/1600s, ISO-100, exp. bias -2, WB 7500K. No filters.

Processed from raw in NX Studio, watermarks added and cropped (2nd picture) in Photoshop Elements.
