The word "groomer" used to describe a very specific and horrifying behaviour: the manipulation of a child by someone seeking to abuse or exploit them.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
➜ Today, some people throw that word around so casually that it has become little more than a slur directed at anyone they don't understand, agree with, or want to demonize.
For decades, we've watched cheerleaders, dancers, beauty pageants, music videos, and pop stars perform in outfits that reveal far more skin than you'll ever see at a family-friendly event. Many of the same people who clutch their pearls over drag queens have no problem watching those performances, buying concert tickets, or sitting in front of the television in their grease-stained second-hand La-Z-boy recliners cheering them on.
➜ So here's a simple question: If revealing clothing is the problem, why are your standards different depending on who is wearing it?
So let's be honest about what's really happening.
The outrage isn't about "protecting children." If it were, the standards would be applied consistently. ➜ The outrage is about *who* is wearing the outfit.
When a young woman dances, it's entertainment. When a drag performer dances, suddenly it's called a threat to society. When a cheerleader performs, it's school spirit. When a drag performer reads a storybook, it's called "grooming."
That isn't child protection. It's .
Family-friendly drag events are celebrations of music, performance, creativity, , and . They are not sexual performances. They are not recruitment drives. They are not grooming. And every minute spent manufacturing fear about drag performers and people is a minute not spent addressing the real dangers children face.
Children deserve protection from abuse. They also deserve to grow up in a world that teaches , , and for people who are different from them.
is easy. is easy. Understanding takes courage.
Maybe it's time we spent less energy policing people who are simply trying to exist and more energy confronting actual harm.
