A beautiful cross fox photographed while exploring the BC Interior a few years back. 🦊😍

The cross fox is a partially melanistic colour variant of the common red fox, making them slightly more rare and certainly striking to see in the wild!

A black bear gives chase, eyes locked onto its prey; a wild Coho salmon!

Vancouver Island black bears are some of the largest in North America. Each fall season, they thrive on a nutrient rich diet of salmon, and can eat upwards of 15 fish per day. Rather than eating the entire fish, they target the most calorie-dense parts: brains, eggs, and back muscles. The remaining salmon carcass is left in the forest to decompose and fertilizes the soil. This is a vital nutrient transfer of marine derived nitrogen and carbon - directly fueling the growth of mosses, plants and trees. 🐟🐻🌲

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!! ❤️

It’s not uncommon for Anna’s hummingbirds to have 2-3 broods (even up to 4) each year. It’s incredible to witness the process and just how dedicated these moms are. Typically 2 small eggs (the size of a jellybean) are laid in each brood, about 16 days later they hatch and the mother feeds its young every 20-30mins, every single day for roughly 3 weeks! That’s about 200 times a day that the mother has to forage for food then regurgitate to feed its young. Even after fledging the nest, young hummingbirds will remain close by to be fed by their mother for an additional 1-2 weeks. Moms are truly super heroes! 🤗

Always a treat spotting a Barny!🦉

Barn owls are primarily nocturnal, emerging after sunset to silently hunt in open fields, grasslands and marshes. Nearly every time I’ve been lucky enough to see one, it’s been too dark to get photos. This sure was a nice surprise! Although the sun had already set, there was just enough light for a few usable images thanks to the incredible low light cabilities of modern cameras!

Happy Earth Day 🌎 Every Day!
It’s pretty wild to think that we live on a planet surrounded by so much beauty and wonder. Here are a few images from over the years that remind me just how lucky we are to be here. If you make it to the last slide, thanks for sticking around 👋🐻

Rainy day B+W 🐻

I tend to be editing more black and white images in recent years. I like the simplicity, yet somehow it also enhances form, texture and drama. Removing colours helps remove distractions, shifting the viewers focus to composition and evoking a deeper, more universal emotional connection. What are your thoughts about black and white photos, like them or not? 🤔

Sleepy barred owl from a morning walk in the rain 💤

A reminder to give wildlife space to rest, hunt, and raise their young. This owl and its family have created quite a stir in Vancouver with hoards of people coming to see and photograph them. Although close to my house, I have avoided visiting this popular spot. This image was taken from my only visit - a morning walk, and after snapping a few photos I continued on my way.

Here are a few “common-sense” ethical guidelines for wildlife viewing and photography:
• Never feed or bait animals (in many cases this is illegal).
• Do not use animal calls/sound recordings to attract animals.
• Watch or photograph from a distance. Use binoculars and telephoto lenses.
• Be quiet and respectful. You are a visitor in their environment, try to blend in.
• Do not chase, flush out, or approach wildlife.
• Move on after a few minutes/limit your time to minimize your impact.
• Be transparent when sharing images of animals photographed in zoo’s, sanctuaries or any controlled environment.
• Use discretion when sharing locations (especially rare, endangered or breeding animals) and do not share exact locations on social media.
