This camera trap setup was built for cougars, but I won’t complain when other species show up! Capturing a good image is hard enough with a camera trap, often going many months between usable photos. Documenting unique behaviour is even trickier. This handsome male black bear is displaying a mating behaviour called straddle marking. Male bears will walk directly over a small bush or tree, flatten it under their body, and urinate on it to leave a message for the next bear that comes along.

It's been a while since I've captured a daytime shot with my camera trap! Last week this handsome male bobcat wandered past my setup which is located at the top of a little meadow. This specific location is used as a scent marking spot by both bobcats and cougars.

Ending the year on a high note! Camera trapping was tough going for the second half of 2024, with a few missed opportunities and some equipment malfunctions. But hey, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. I was fortunate enough to capture this stunning bobcat in its fluffy winter coat a few weeks ago. Excited for more snow and to see what the rest of the winter brings!

A female mountain lion cruises past my camera trap with one of her two kittens tucked behind her. It’s been a very quiet summer for these cats as they’ve followed their preferred prey to higher elevations. I’m looking forward to their return to lower elevations as the days grow colder and shorter over the coming months.
