Babe, wake up. Last possible day of chasing this year is happening on the prairies today.

All kinds of thunderstorm activity is on tap that will begin in Alberta this afternoon, move into Saskatchewan this evening and arrive in Manitoba in the early morning hours Monday morning.

Strong winds, severe hail between quarter to ping-pong sized and localized downpours will be the main threats along any storms that develop today.

Enjoying a relaxing dinner after a long day of trucking and well will you look at that, lady aurora appeared over my head in Rycroft, Alberta at 11:00PM MDT tonight.

Nice beaver! Thank you. I just had it stuffed.

The Giant Beaver Sculpture was unveiled on July 21st, 2004 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the town.

The Beaverlodge Beaver is an engineering marvel. It took 90 gallons of polyurethane to coat, approx. 13 gallons of paint, and 18 blocks of foam to make the sculpture. Heavy Industries in Calgary built the beaver in two section, the beaver and the log.

Measurements:
• The beaver weighs: 1,500 lbs. The log weighs 1,500 lbs.
• The Beaver is: 18’ long, 10’ wide, 10’ high.
• The Log is: 5’ high, 20’ long.

Will parts of central and southern Alberta get to hear the four favourite letters (QLCS) of this summer storm season again this afternoon? Very good chance of it.

Supercell and Multicell storms will form in a line along the foothills between Rocky Mountain House and Claresholm and drive southeastward this afternoon and evening.

The main threats with these storms will be damaging winds (possibly straight-line in variety) and hail ranging from toonie size up to golf ball/billiard ball size in some areas.

In northwestern Alberta, slow moving pulse and pop up storms could lead to localized flooding today along with loonie sized hail.

After a convective squall line of storms roared over parts of central and southern Alberta yesterday and early this morning, the stage is set again for more convective storms to fire up off the foothills between Hinton and Calgary this afternoon and push eastward into the evening and overnight hours that are looking to pack a little more punch than what transpired yesterday.

Marble to Toonie sized hail, strong wind gusts and heavy downpours will be the main threat. Wildfire smoke pushing in from British Columbia may advect some of these storms though.

And for those heading to see AC/DC at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton this evening, you know the drill. Especially from the previous weekend music and sporting events that have been held at this stadium this summer.

Nocturnal thunderstorms. We don’t get them like we used to anymore in Alberta these days, so when they do appear, you sit back and enjoy the light show from mother nature like the one that graced it’s presence over Red Deer, Alberta just after 2:00AM MDT this morning,

Anyone travelling along the Highway 16 or Highway 43 corridor today west and northwest of Edmonton should be extra vigilant at keeping an eye to the sky late this afternoon into the early evening hours.

These storms will grow upscale quickly and be fast moving, but they are also going to pack a serious punch in them as well.

Ahh yes, late July in Alberta. The last kick at the can for severe weather. And this week has some interesting convective weather setups, beginning this afternoon with severe weather in and around the Edmonton metro area that will set the stage for even more severe weather tomorrow along parts of the Yellowhead Corridor and Highway 43 west and northwest of Edmonton.

Damaging winds, heavy downpours, hail ranging anywhere from ping-pong ball to tennis ball sized and a high chance of the T-Word or two are all in play.

Did you know that July 31st falls on a Friday this year? Also something to keep in mind for later this week.
