I seem to be fixated on the Port Colborne lighthouse this week. This composition shows the rocks surrounding the marina. I think they make for a nice contrast as they stretch off across the image.

I am definitely favouring panoramic views lately. I find the 3-1 aspect ratio pleasing for certain images that suit it, including this one. It's a common ratio used for wall spreads in large, open rooms. 12 foot wide by 4 foot high looks amazing.

This image of a quiet day at a lake has many levels. Serenity. Or not?

This serene location features an overcast sky and the most amazing trees surrounding a recreational fishing lake. Look closer.

Lake Erie
The end of the Port Colborne, Ontario, breakwall.
Notice the ice shove from the lake beyond pushing against it. Notice the circular patches indicating an uneven freeze with some patches thinner than others as warmer unfrozen water continues to move below the frozen surface. And notice the icicles on that automated, windswept lighthouse. It's a whole different world, out there.

Though the City may sleep, the Welland Canal does not. It operates 24/7 to keep freight flowing around the Great Lakes and beyond.

It's cold enough to freeze waves.
Poetic license.

Ahead of the storm forecast tomorrow, I shot some images along the Lake Erie shoreline. The lake, frozen, looked like a planet from a science fiction show.

Sunrises in winter months are often grey and dull because of cloud cover. Not today. So when I saw the first light of dawn I was out of bed and out of the house. It’s a bit cold.

It comes as no surprise to me that some birds fly South for the winter. I would too if I could.

Here in Niagara we have snow and ice and sun and cloud and wind. All the things that make me want to get out and explore. I wonder whether the cows will be out today? Those hairy bests in the snow would be an amazing sight, I think.

I am spending January working through my photo collection, cataloguing and culling, refining, categorising, reworking and revisiting images I intended to come back later but never did. I moved on. I should listen to my own advice - slow down.

It's amazing to me the number of memories I have rediscovered since the new year began. And the sheer volume of photos I have still to work through. This will not be a fast process. But hey. Good things are worth putting in a little work.
