Orion Nebula

Single 60sec exposure, Canon R5. 100-500

I am no deep space astrophotographer, but I am trying!
Testing out new gear and enjoying the process.
This has been on my radar for years now, but I was feeling very overwhelmed by the setup of my star tracker. Thankfully
Was able to get me going as we worked through the kinks and learning curve of my star adventurer 2i.

This image was taken Feb 11th, when was visiting and we wanted to get some images up on the ridge with some gnarly twisted lumber pines.

My whole focus of the night was to move slow, rinse and repeat the setup and try to get an image or two if the stars aligned 😜

I am finding major limitations with my setup for astrophotography but learning the process has been great.
I shot this at 100mm in 60kms winds 😅 not the most ideal situation but I was mainly focused on building muscle memory for warmer, wind less nights.

Send me all the tips!

can I trade you my star adventurer?! After seeing it in use in the field.. I'm ready to sell my current setup 😅

Untamed

February's warm spell took us on an adventure to Piney Point's snow-free trails.
We found a beautiful clearing, enjoyed our peanut butter sandwiches, and took in the stunning views of Crowsnest Mountain to the west.
That's when an eagle swooped into view, flying over the ridge. I grabbed my camera, but it slipped away before I managed a shot. Thankfully, it returned, circling above us 2 or 3 times with curiosity before flying off again.

Winter's grasp

Poking around in my hard drives and re-experiencing moments. I've learned to appreciate the beauty of delayed posting, letting photos simmer in the background until they're ready to be shared.

It's amazing how much more I enjoy my work when I'm not racing to meet a deadline or fit the algorithm.

Winter's sunrise

With the cold and snow returning to much of the province, I was reminded of this early morning scene I shot from October 2024.

Where I live, scenes like these don't last long with the abrupt and intense winds (Wind capital of Canada)

False spring.

Southern Alberta has spent most of winter in a false like spring state this year, leaving hundreds of thousands of geese here locally.
Initially I was overtaken by the sounds of the enormous groups on the river, but was drawn to the sky when I noticed hundreds more approaching to land.

Absolutely love shooting with telephoto's and the compression I'm able to achieve in doing so.

Liquid gold

Hard drives are full of thousands of images, but imposter syndrome paired with a dislike of editing has kept me quiet for a long time.

My good buddy is down and in our travels we stumbled upon some beauty when scouting locations. Out went life's stress, creativity flowed and inspiration is climbing up.

Shane has set some goals for me, with the end result of bringing my images back to life and off the drives.
Glad to have friends to keep me grounded, inspired and stoked.

Sunset snack.

I've been fortunate to capture ALOT of foxes this spring and each encounter has been so unique.
This fox was quietly going to a cache that it hid earlier that day. Completely unbothered, I sat in the ditch as it crossed the road, picked up its meal and made its way back to the den.
Trusting the process, investing time and giving ALOT of space has proven to be the recipe for luck.

Great horned owl, Arctic plumage variation.

and I set out last week with no real plans aside trying to find a few critters and explore new areas. We opted to head east to skip a snowstorm which ended up being the best choice.
At the dead end of a rural road, late in the afternoon we were fortunate to find this beauty tucked away in a dense group of bushes.

Owl nesting season is here, so please practice your best ethics when looking for or viewing these creatures.

Northern Pygmy Owl
Jan 2025

I just spent 4, 8 hour days going through my hard drives and keywording my images in hopes it will help me stay organized and find my files when needed. A daunting 97,414 images to be exact! I can't even count how many times I have been asked if I have certain images and fail to find them in a timely matter or be overwhelmed by the large amounts of files to dig through.
Slowly but surely getting more organized so I can just focus on capturing images again.
This Pygmy owl has been elusive over the past couple years but with many trips and patience I was able to narrow down my search area.
After briefly seeing it twice in previous days I knew that I was getting closer.
Finally luck was on my side and I was able to spend a couple quick moments, viewing this tiny owl high in a dead tree before I moved on without disturbing it.
Heavily cropped image taken with a 300mm 2.8 on my R5.

Comet A3 c2023 Atlas (TSUCHINSHAN-ATLAS)

What a treat it's been to photograph.
This has been the first time I've actively gone after a comet
(Major FOMO from missing Neowise)
I still feel very green to astro photography but slowly learning and leaning into it. Definitely helps that we have had many fantastic nights in the past month between this comet and Aurora.
Hoping that as the moon fades from its current full state it will give us more opportunity to capture this beauty!
Oct 14th seemed to be the best opportunity to view it, naked eye with the anti-tail present.

This is a stack of 45 images, 2 sec exposure at 200mm F-2.8 Oct 14th 7:53-8:09pm

Oct 10/11th 2024
Easily one of the most euphoric nights I have ever had.
My buddy and I had been drooling over the data all week, knowing this solar storm was likely going to huge. We contemplated shooting in Waterton, where I had witnessed the May 4th solar storm and we debated locations all across Southern Alberta. After much debate we decided on Writing on Stone, a location I had only been to once or twice and never at night. I started the drive second guessing if the 5 hour roundtrip was going to be worth it, not knowing the location and having clear skies right at home.
After a gorgeous sunset, right at dusk I had made it to the visitor center parking lot.
Without wasting any time I shut the engine off and the skies were dancing! The most vivid pinks, purples and greens no matter which direction I looked.
It was only 5 or so mins later when and
Pulled up to join me.
We immediately headed into the hoodoos, bouncing up and down trails trying to find compositions as quick as we could. Eventually we ended up on a high point, with the Milk River winding below us.
I took a couple test shots, mind blown that I was able to capture Aurora south facing into the moon.
Once I found the angle I was happy with, I shot the largest panorama I have ever attempted.
This image is a 3x6 pano, 18 image total.
Thankful for the clear night, insane display and good company.
Not sure I'll ever top this experience.
