A Bird Nerd in Paris Pictures of birds around our property. In 2022 I started taking pictures of birds around our property, just to document them.

At Jan 2024 I had documented 97 different species of which 23 species are nesting here! Update: Sep 2025 116 species/33 nesting

Got my first warbler of the season as migration starts! 😩

The Canada Warbler (Cardellina canadensis) and the Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) are among the very first warbler species to head south from Canada in the fall. They often begin departing their breeding grounds as early as mid-to-late July and August because they spend a very short time on northern nesting territories. (Source: All About Birds)

I returned here hoping to see a Red Necked Grebe chick, but no luck. I did get pictures of adult grebes and an awesome Bald Eagle with a fish almost as big as it was. Unfortunately the eagle was a very long way off and was flying towards me so the pictures are out of focus. They are still good enough to see the sizes however.

Bonapartes gulls in Port Stanley.

Hawk Cliff. A short road a few minutes from Port Stanley that ends in a cliff and viewing area for migrating birds. While we were there we didn’t see or hear even one bird. No chickadees, goldfinches or even robins. There were some Stag Shop flyers available however. 😆

Aylmer Wildlife Management Area

Finally got around to visiting this site. It was recommended to me a couple years ago but I never managed to get there. For some reason I thought it was going to be a site that involved tough hiking and some bushwhacking. It isn’t. 😆

Easy to get to, raised viewing areas overlooking a pond. I think there are some trails as well but we got there too late in the day to really explore the area. Will have to go back one day.

Watts Pond Road pond, Paris

A gorgeous Osprey showed up.

At first I thought he s/he had an injured foot because the foot was hanging down instead of gripping the branch. The Osprey then clamped onto a branch with both feet and seemed ok.
I googled why an Osprey might do that and apparently it’s to cool their bodies. It was a hot day, so I guess it’s like us sleeping with one foot outside the blanket. 😀

Watts Pond Trails.
A new park in Paris that runs alongside Watts Pond.
It isn’t attracting a lot of birds yet and the pond is hard to see and get to, but hopefully it will become a great birding spot in a few years.

The best views of Watts Pond are found only by walking along a very busy, Watts Pond Road and standing at the guard rails. The pond gets a good variety of birds this time of year.
