In 2008 I pulled my first roll of 35mm black and white film off a reel after learning how to develop it. I’ll bet the photos weren’t much more than my dogs and maybe a portrait or two. But whatever was on that roll sparked something in me and said, “this is what you are made for” I remember telling my friends in high school soon after I would be a photographer, I honestly had no idea what that meant. I went to photo school at Algonquin and met some amazing people and of course teachers, I perfected my craft but lost my way in digital archives of all my work. I needed something real, tangible, an object of less certainty but full of beauty only future us would discover through a labour of love and care. I built a lab, I spent my summers there making work of my clients most love full days. These days where the light catches just right, where my film collects the memories I’ve wanted to catch since that very first time 18 years ago when I pulled that film out of that Patterson tank. This is where my heart lies, in celluloid and smelly darkrooms full of chemicals, bringing this all to light. There’s a fulfilment here, I’ve never had before thanks to every lovely human being that has reached out and trusted me to cover their days and while this is just the smallest selection of those days, they all, every single one stick with me. The smiles, the laughter, the chaos and of course the love of family, friends, dogs and cats. Thank you for letting me live this dream, thank you for the trust. I can’t wait for another year of all of this beauty and to many, many more rolls to pull from those tanks.
