Over the years there have been certain moments that have confirmed we were on the right path. Clients who moved their wedding date just so they could work with us. Clients who recommended us to their siblings, and then their best friends once the siblings were all married. Clients who flew us across oceans to have us be a part of their day. Photographers and artists and wedding planners and industry insiders who had the “pick of the litter” and still chose us for their own weddings.

Whenever this happens, it still floors us (truthfully, it makes me cry every time) and finding this wedding inquiry in our inbox was one of those very special moments.

ROB LLOYD - OTTAWA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER is someone whose work we have admired for years, and he looked at one of the most important days in his brother and future brother-in-law’s life, a day he wanted to experience with his family, and put his trust in us to document it.

We followed newlywed Mathilde and Emmanuel from their wedding, held at his family’s 15th-century château in the Loire Valley, all the way north to Normandy, where she grew up.

Chasing the light through the winding roads, only stopping for sheep to pass. Two people who clearly belong to this place and us just trying to keep up. When the bay finally came into view, we instantly understood why she brought us there.

There are few places on earth like Mont Saint-Michel. A Benedictine abbey rising straight out of the bay, built across five centuries by monks who somehow balanced an architectural marvel on top of a rock. Twice a day the tide pulls back to reveal miles of sand, then comes racing in fast enough to strand anyone who wandered too far. This was Mathilde’s childhood backdrop, the silhouette on the horizon every time she looked toward the sea.

And just south of the mount, in the bay itself, sits a town called Saint-James. Since 1889 it’s where they’ve made the Breton stripe famous the world over. So when they chose to wear St.James for these portraits, it wasn’t a simple fashion choice. It was home, and heritage, woven into cotton.

A few weeks after returning back from the trip, speeding tickets began arriving in our mailbox - an unexpected souvenir from our adventures. Dear reader, we regret nothing.

Renee and Ghislain said their vows beneath the soaring leaded-glass windows of the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Ottawa skyline stretched out behind them, soft light pouring in like it had been waiting for just this moment. The colour palette was delicate and ethereal; peach ranunculus, blush garden roses, sky-blue delphinium, carried through everything from the florals to the sage green checkered dance floor, right down to Renee’s gorgeous bouquet that looked like the first warm week of June arriving in someone’s arms.

None of that happens without an incredible team. Kennedy Events held the whole day together with the kind of planning that makes everything feel effortless; The Gathering Event Co. translated the vision into something you could see and feel and stand inside. Merry Fairy Weddings brought the ceremony to life in a way that felt warm and genuine. One Fine Beauty and Showpony Hair had everyone ready and glowing. Oxygen Entertainment kept the energy exactly where it needed to be, and My Catering Group fed everyone beautifully. It was one of those vendor teams where you can truly feel how much everyone cared.

And when a couple can feel that - when they walk into their day and sense that every detail is considered - something shifts. They can stop managing and start experiencing. You see it everywhere, in the unguarded moments, the long table conversations, the genuine tears and laughter. That kind of presence is a gift to everyone around them. It sets the tone for the event, it shines through in the photos, and most importantly it means the couple actually gets to have the best day of their lives. 🤍

I was pulling samples of our work in the Chateau Laurier Ballroom this week for an inquiring couple, and came across this absolute angel who’s three-day-long celebration ended with an incredible reception at the Chateau - and I was struck by this sequence, remembering I only had a short window for portraits while Ry captured the details downstairs before heading down to start the party and how a. Can you even imagine being this breathtaking on day three of partying? Wowowow. And b. sometimes all we really need is a few moments, a little movement, and some nice window light to create a future heirloom 🤍

There’s a lot of talk out there about creating a timeless wedding aesthetic, but every wedding is a document of its moment for better or worse. A silhouette, a colour palette, there will always be a “tell”.

What actually holds up across decades isn’t the aesthetic. It’s the feeling between the people in the frame. The specific way two people look at each other on their wedding day, is the one thing that truly transcends time. It belongs entirely to them, and could never feel dated 🤍

I truly love early spring. Sure, it can be a little mercurial in this corner of the world, but there’s something so undeniably optimistic about this time of the season. There’s a shared sense of anticipation, when the landscape is still bare and the air is filled with petrichor, and the first flowers peeking through somehow feel even brighter. I love it I love it I love it 🌷
