Today was full of ups and downs.
Downs: Waking up at 4:45am to go see the great blue heron rookery, soaking my feet and pants trudging through the damp woods, getting scratched across the face with pricklyash, sitting in intermittent rain for 5 hours (20% chance, my a$$), and then getting a flat tire on the way back to my parents' house.
Ups: Taking a lot of heron pictures (some of which will hopefully be good!) and then topping the afternoon off with my first fawn sighting of the year (x 2) and my first ever fawn rescue.
Video context: My mom and I were coming around an S-curve in the road and came face to face with a mummy deer halfway across, and her fawns behind her. The little ones were startled and returned to the right side, while mum continued on to the left side. I pulled over, turned off the car, put my 4-way flashers on, turned on my phone camera and waited. As you can see in the first part of the video the fawns did manage to cross over. Shortly after that, a truck came whipping through at full speed, despite my warning lights and hand waving. It soon became apparent that the fawns weren't out of danger because they were separated from mum by a rail fence she'd easily jumped over but would be a challenge for them. The first one eventually managed, but the second one was panicking. The video ends just before a failed attempt to crawl between the rails (at which point I said a curse word - worse than the one in the video - and set down my phone). I jumped out of the car and managed to grab it and lift it over the fence, where it scampered away. It was so light and tiny. Aside from a couple small kicks, it didn't fight me at all. Normally I would not want to interfere at all with wildlife, let alone pick it up, but I couldn't bear the thought of this little fawn getting hit.
