Avian aerial acrobats
Hummingbirds represent nature’s most versatile flyers, capable of hovering perfectly still, flying backward, upside down, and even upside down backward; flight capabilities that are unique among birds. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) have one of the highest metabolic rates of any animal, with heart rates up to 1260 beats per minute, breathing rate of about 250 breaths per minute even at rest, and beats its wings up to 80 times per second, creating the characteristic humming sound that gives the family its name.
