Responsible and irresponsible models -

Part of the income that keeps the Merivale Studio solvent, comes from clients (both photographers and models) who rent the studio on an hourly basis to do their own projects. Occasionally, a photographer will rent the studio for 2 hours or more, and arrange for a model to work with them; but the model will simply not show up, or will show up late expecting the studio to be available outside the rental time. We call that "ghosting" and it is irresponsible behaviour. This unfortunate situation happened again today and I am frankly annoyed by it, Models must be adult enough to stand by their commitments and arrive at the studio, on time and be prepared to start collaborating as they have agreed to do. That is the mark of professionalism that we expect from responsible adults. Anything less, is irresponsible and immature behaviour that has no place in this business. Your reputation will suffer and photographers will never again work with you.

Just a reminder to act responsibly and keep your word.

Recently I have had some health issues that made it difficult to to keep up my normal pace of activities. But Things are better now and I am in the process of catching up. Meanwhile the renovations of the studio are almost finished and the place looks and feels awesome! We are more than happy to welcme you at the studio. I think you will love what we have done- Book a session, taske a workshop or just drop in and take al look.

Such a great place to work! Thank to the Regular Montly Partners for keepinng things going while I was away.

Recently a workman under contract to another business in the mall droped a steel ladder accidently on the high voltage lines causing considerable damage to electrical instalations and shutting off the studio's electrical supply. We have been struggling to get a continuous supply of power back on and the good news is that we have it (fingers crossed) and are back to normal opperations.

But even better than that - during the lack of power, we were able to continue our program of renovation, and install new cabinets and upgrade the studio. Photographers, come on in and take a look. Better still - book a shoot in the newly renovated Merivale Photographic Studio.`

Recently a workman doing moderations in the plaza containing the Merivale Photographic studio dropped a metal ladder on the high voltage wires cominng into the plazaa causing dameaage to several tranformers and cutting off our power, But I am now happy to report that the lines have now been completely repaired and we have full power restored, and are fully operating again as usual. Come on in.

Cell Phone or DSLR Generated Images?, Digital Files or Prints?

Anyone who is interested in Family History and Genealogy will appreciate the enormous value of pictures of the long dead individuals that were our ancestors. It is wonderful to look back at earlier generations and see where we got that red hair or that cute nose, or our other features. Pictures give us a whole new sense of attachment, wonder and affection for our own progenitors. The better the quality and state of preservation of the picture, the more impact it has on us. Portraits from the past that were carefully created and posed by professional studio photographers - using archival dark room printing techniques are far far better than those fuzzy and faded images made by amateurs using a Kodak box camera, and drug store printing, for example. No doubt, the same sort of comparison will apply to the digital cell phone picture as compared to images carefully created by a professional using a high quality DSLR camera, a sharp top quality lens, enhancement in Lightroom and/or Photoshop, mounted and matted using high quality archival materials and applying years of experience honing the photographer’s craft. Yes, cell phones are improving; but they still are designed for quick and easy “snapshots” for digital media not high quality, archival portraits.

Now October is just days away, and Thanksgiving is traditionally the time that families start thinking about wonderful gifts to give their family members and friends for Christmas. Well here is an idea that you might consider – give a very special gift to your present family members and even more importantly, to future, yet to be born, generations,…….. Make an appointment at the Merivale Photographic Studio, or one of our competitors to bring in the family and have high quality family portraits created by one of the highly talented photographers who work out of the Merivale Studio. The COOLEST Rental Studio in Ottawa

Well this summer has been a real scorcher but at the Merivale, we have improved our atmospheric control and we claim now to be the "Coolest" studio you can work in for these hot summer days. We have invested in a brand new Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier that work together to control the atmosphere in the studio at a comfortable temepature and humidity. If you add to this, the fact that we are probably the best equipped rental studio in tertms of lights, modifiers, props etc., and our moderate price, you just have to book your next shoot at the Merivale. Oh I almsot forgot, we also have installed a refrigerator filled with cool drinks that you can drink during the shoot, and reasonable payment for these treats is on the honor system.
