Soon after we learn to see, we learn we can also be seen.

That awareness changes something.

It’s part of why being photographed can feel strange at first, even performative. You’re not just looking anymore; you’re being looked at.

But once the day settles into itself, and there’s room to breathe, most people stop noticing the camera.

The photos aren’t in the choreography of the day, but in that intimate, mutual noticing.

Recently, one of my couples spent their morning on a boat before sunrise. Just the two of them, coffee in hand, with no one else around (except me, casually third-wheeling).

They wanted to go into their wedding day feeling grounded. But it also did something else: it allowed them to go into their wedding without the pressure to fit it all into 1 day. They weren’t scrambling to find a quiet moment between the ceremony and the reception, because they’d already had one, days before, on their own terms.

I think we’ve built this idea that a wedding has to hold all of these different stories in one day. The romantic couples portraits, the candid family moments, the friendships, all of it.

But it isn’t the only way to do it.

Over the last few years, and especially now that I have kids, summer has become a time I’m just trying to keep up with.

There was a version of my life where summer meant my time was fully my own. No pickups, no camps, no sharing our nights with overly-energized toddlers who napped way too long during the day (even when they shouldn’t have).

I love what this season brings: the warmth, the weddings and creative projects I get to document, working alongside some of my favourite people. But for a while now I’ve been trying to name something I’ve felt has been missing, and yesterday the word popped into my head.

Reflection.

Summer has this vivacity to it. This underlying obligation to fill your days and weekends with activities, to see everyone, and go everywhere before it leaves as quickly as it came.

The cooler months don’t ask that. They bring routine, stillness, and a certain level of introspection. Time alone with my own thoughts. And truth be told, I didn’t realize how much I yearned for that stillness, and how much it fuels me creatively, until I’d gone this long without it.

The older my kids get, the harder I have to work to set aside that time. Time to write, to play, to daydream. And even when I manage it, it’s never quite a guarantee.

The unfulfilled feeling I’ve been sitting with lately hasn’t been about anything physical or material I have or don’t have. I think it’s been about what I’ve been filling my time with, and the pace I think I “should” be going at.

You can usually name the venue before anything else.

If you look through enough wedding galleries, you’ll start recognizing places. The same staircase, the same window, the same angle on the same ceremony spot, repeated. Not because anyone’s doing it wrong, but because they’ve been proven to work.

And over time, what works quietly becomes the way it’s done.

And although the venue might be the same, the people inside it never are. So when I walk into a space, familiar or not, those go-to spots aren’t really what I’m watching. I’m watching how people and light move through it. How they interact with each other. None of it has ever happened before (not in that exact way anyways).

And all of those nuances decide what the photos become.

Since this gallery went out, my bride has messaged to say that she keeps finding things she didn’t see the first time. Moments she didn’t know were happening, because they unfolded just outside her line of sight while she was busy living her own version of the day.

Even (who spent months making sure every detail embodied the vision this couple had in mind), keeps returning to the photos that have nothing to do with the decor.

That’s the part I can’t stop thinking about. A wedding only happens once, but everyone in the room experiences it differently. The photos are how all those versions find their way back to each other.
