So many different perspectives to be seen and stories to be told when taking images of the falls. I love looking for textures and angles that make the viewer think!

Lighting is everything in photography, so many different moods and textures depending on the direction of it or if there is any at all. Backlighting is probably one of my favourites to play around with but seeing as you can't be too picky in landscape photography, you pretty much have to work with what you're dealt! Have a great Saturday night!

I've been going through all my Niagara images trying to look for specific ones for a contest, if there's one thing I can surely say its that it doesn't matter how many times you go for a sunrise in the morning, they're always unique and so beautiful. If anyone is interested, I'm posting to Instagram as that's where the contest is. Feel free to pop over and check out the images! https://www.instagram.com/christinehessphotography/

The thickness of the ice bridge during a good cold winter is amazing. Makes me wonder what the thickness would have been prior to the ice boom being installed? Must have been crazy thick back then!

I couldn't make it down to the falls this morning and I guess its a good thing because there wasn't any beautiful sunrise waiting! Well that and I had to go in first thing for blood work lol. If there's one thing I've noticed in the past is that when there's bitter cold temperatures plus the wind chill (I'm talking around -25c+), for some reason there was a lack of sunrises, it was usually overcast or its almost like the air was so thick the sunrays couldn't pe*****te through for lack of a better description. Hope everyone stays warm until we get a reprieve next week! As always, feel free to share, these are originals, no AI!

Feel free to share, no AI here! The first image is from the other morning when I went down for sunrise. Wasn't quite what I hoped for but there's never any guarantee. It got me to thinking about other winters we've had and this one seems to have a fairly similar timeline as the winter of 2014/2015. It started out fairly mild and rainy and carried through that way until around the first or second week in January when colder temperatures arrived. Then the snow and more colder temperatures, it just seemed to be never ending. That was the year that I had a few images go viral around the world and CNN even picked them up and aired them and then made the trip down here to air a show direct. The amount of snow and ice that was down at the falls was absolutely incredible. The build up seemed to almost reach the top of the Horseshoe Falls! I remember there was still ice/snow mounds down at the falls in April because I was doing a photo tour walk for the Professional Photographers of Canada and I couldn't get access to Journey Behind the Falls because they were trying to jack hammer the ice off the platforms! Definitely a winter to remember!

Feel free to share, this isnt AI. Took a quick drive down to the falls tonight to check out the ice bridge. The American Falls is starting to build up with snow/ice like it was in 2014 but the one thing I noticed about the Horseshoe Falls that wasn't there the other night is the large snow covered boulder at the base of the falls. The only time I've ever seen that rock is in the winter when its covered in snow and even then, it takes a lot to finally see it, it doesn't happen often! Cant forget the night rainbow in the last image!

Not AI, feel free to share! If there's one thing I love it's photographing Niagara Falls in the winter but even better is good lighting down there. There's so much to see besides the obvious from the Medusa like ice covered trees and lamp posts to the falls themselves, then every once in awhile an image like the one in the middle comes up. What do you see when you look at it? A profile of Ol' man winter or even the legend of the "Maid of the Mist"? A friend of mine mentioned Poltergeist!

No AI here, feel free to share! These aren't from today while I was down at the falls but rather during an earlier cold snap that we had and most importantly all the factors came into play with the weather to create a winter wonderland, aka "Narnia"! I'm loving the ice on the lamp posts, it's almost like the shape of a person hugging the post, or whatever your imagination sees! I'll post pictures from the this morning a bit later, stay warm and have a great day!

Feel free to share, no AI here. The amount of ice that can accumulate around the falls during a good cold winter is truly amazing. Even the mist is different, so much more "compact" and thick, you get pelted with ice pellets if you're in its path. If I had to use 1 single word to describe it, its Narnia.
