Some recent drone shots of the area around our cabin. I’m actually in 3 of the shots. Can you find me? Seeing oneself as a tiny speck in the midst of such a vast and beautiful landscape is quite humbling!

As an architectural photographer, I’m always looking for opportunities to wander around impressive buildings and take pictures. That’s not possible in most public buildings, but I’ve found that cathedrals and basilicas in major cities are usually open to the public and not terribly busy. That’s why I photograph churches wherever I go (pretty much the only time I go to church!)
I got a very pleasant surprise in Cheticamp, a relatively small town that has a huge, beautiful church. Built in the late 1800’s from sandstone quarried on Cheticamp Island and hauled over an ice road to the mainland by the inhabitants, Eglise Saint Pierre is a testament to the resilience of the Acadian people. Kicked out of the Maritimes by the British during the Great Upheaval of 1755, over 10,000 Acadians were sent to France or the States (becoming the Cajuns of Louisiana), with a small number hiding out in the Maritimes. Today, the Acadian culture is alive and well in Nova Scotia. You’ll notice small Acadian flags - red, blue, and white with a gold star - adorning the pews as well as the altar.
The best part of photographing this church? It’s the first church I’ve been in with an upper gallery that is accessible to the public. I finally got to take a photo I’ve been wanting to take for a long time - the whole church from an elevated perspective. The things that make a photographer happy!

Happy World Photography Day! Here are some drone shots from a recent trip to PEI and Nova Scotia. From the fields of potato plants and red sand shores of PEI, to the lighthouses of Cape Breton, the 3 iconic churches of Mahone’s Bay, and the rocky outcrop of Peggy’s Cove, I had so much fun taking photos with my new drone. It’s added a whole new dimension to my photography. Whether you shoot mirrorless, with a dslr, with a drone, or with a phone, photography is definitely something to celebrate.

Taking photos of downtown Toronto architecture during a recent photo walk with friends from the Niagara Association of Photographic Arts was very different than my latest experience in Europe. In Toronto, the emphasis was on lines, curves, negative space, and contrast, requiring me to look at buildings differently, and resulting in abstract and minimalist photos. For me, the high point of the day was photographing the new Cherry Street bridges in the port lands. I’ve wanted to photograph them for a while, and they did not disappoint with their modernist lines and bold colours set against a pure blue sky. Here are some of my colour photos from that day. Black and white to follow.

More tulips. Can’t help myself.

Here are my favourite photos from a recent outing to Casa Loma with members of the Niagara Association of Photographic Arts. While I enjoyed taking photos of the various ornate rooms, I also liked focusing on the details, things or areas that seemed to me to be small oases of quiet stillness. Thanks to Linette and Dave for organizing this very enjoyable outing.

This year’s Mother’s Day tribute to my kind, loving, beautiful mother. She’s been gone a long time now, but I treasure the wonderful memories she left behind.
