LP Photography

LP Photography I believe that every moment in life has the potential to be beautiful and is worth remembering.

With my camera in my hand, I strive to capture life as it unfolds, creating a visual record of the world around us.

Spending the long weekend on Bowen Island, back at my parents’ house, a home filled with love and layers of memory. It’s where Rachel and I got married. Where my children, now teenagers, once ran naked through the garden without a care.

I had my camera with me as I wandered familiar trails, reconnecting with the land and crossing paths with old friends.

We ended the day gathered around the dining room table, with stories, laughter, and great conversation, the music of my youth playing on the stereo.

A Pause in the Rain – Anna’s Hummingbird, Buttertubs Marsh, March 2025

It was a dreary morning as I set out in search of a hummingbird nest—Anna’s Hummingbirds are among the earliest breeders here. I scanned the branches of shrubs and low-hanging limbs of conifers, looking for the tiny, lichen-covered nests that blend so seamlessly into their surroundings. But if any were there, they remained hidden. My camera was getting wetter by the minute, cutting my time outside shorter than I would have liked.

Before heading back, I spotted this Anna’s Hummingbird perched ever so close. It sat still against the shifting rain, feathers damp, as the greens around it deepened under the steady downpour.

Spring is fast approaching here on the West Coast.

The herring have arrived!
As I approached the beach and gazed at the turquoise water, I watched the herring spawn unfold, excitement rising within me. The beach was alive—gulls and eagles dove, seals surfaced, and herons waded deep into the frenzy. I had to remind myself to slow down, breathe, and fully take in the scene before me.

As my excitement settled, I began shooting with my Nikon D850 and 200-500mm f/5.6 lens. Working mostly with a wide aperture and a fast shutter speed, I achieved a narrow field of view, drawing the viewer’s attention to fleeting gestures within this surge of life along the water’s edge.

On this World Wildlife Day, I spent time photographing an Anna’s Hummingbird on Vancouver Island. These tiny, vibrant birds are fiercely territorial, often returning to the same perch after chasing off intruders. Knowing this, I stayed in place, waiting patiently for his return. The challenge wasn’t just in the waiting—it was in the light. With the bright sky behind him, exposing for the scene would have left the hummingbird in dark shadow. Instead, I overexposed the image, blowing out the sky to capture the bird’s details. Wildlife photography requires patience, but also preparation—understanding light, anticipating movement, and being ready for the moment when it arrives.

I've been returning this week to one of my favorite photography spots, Qualicum Beach, in anticipation of the herring spawn. Just days before the shoreline transforms with the arrival of thousands of seabirds, sea lions, and other marine life, I photographed these Sanderlings and Black-bellied Plovers as they rested near the water’s edge.

For some, the cormorant is a symbol of resilience, strength, and transformation. Watching these double-breasted cormorants in Maple Bay, I witnessed their stillness and focused observation of the water’s movement, before they effortlessly shift into purposeful motion.
A reminder that quiet moments of reflection and observation can lead to decisive action.

A foggy, rainy day on Maple Mountain—perfect for an adventure with my dog, Felix. Bringing my camera along with him has been a work in progress. He’s learning to settle beside me as I shoot, though we still manage to startle just about everything in our path.

Blending these two worlds isn’t easy, but we’re finding our rhythm. He needs his daily adventure, and I need the quiet focus of photography. Learning to do both together... time will tell.
