These photos of Nanaimo were taken earlier this year during a wildlife photo walk with . I headed out hoping to focus on birds and wildlife, but with my longest lens at 400mm, I quickly realized I didn’t quite have the reach I needed. I mean, I already knew its limitations but was hopeful for closer-up encounters.
At first, I felt frustrated creatively, like I couldn’t find the perspective or inspiration I was looking for. So I shifted gears and returned to what usually grounds me: landscapes, details, and the quieter moments in nature.
These aren’t my strongest images technically, but they still matter to me because they reflect a real moment in the creative process. Sometimes photography isn’t about coming home with your best work, it’s about learning to adapt, noticing what’s still around you, and finding beauty anyway.
