Hey friends, it’s been a minute!

I know I haven’t posted much since November—carpal tunnel surgery had me sidelined, but both hands are healing up, and I’m almost ready to get back behind the camera.

That said, I need to shake off the rust and get back in the groove. So let’s make a deal! I’m looking for a few passionate people—he/she/they🏳️‍🌈—to collaborate with. 🌊 Spotlight on the CCGS Bartlett 🌊

The CCGS Bartlett is a vital part of Canada's Coast Guard fleet, serving as a versatile multi-task vessel on the West Coast. Based right here on Vancouver Island, this vessel is named after Captain Robert Bartlett, a legendary Arctic explorer who was instrumental in mapping uncharted waters.

What makes the Bartlett stand out?

Primary Role: Aids in navigational safety, search and rescue missions, and supports environmental response efforts.

Capabilities: Equipped to perform everything from maintaining buoys to responding to maritime emergencies.

Design: Built to handle the rugged conditions of Canada's coastal waters, ensuring reliable service year-round.

This hardworking vessel is an unsung hero, ensuring the safety of our waters and coastline. Next time you’re near the docks, keep an eye out for this iconic red-and-white workhorse!

Witnessing a Legend: The Mighty Philippine Mars

Today, I had the honor of seeing the Philippine Mars, one of the iconic JRM Mars water bombers. Although I didn’t get to see her in action on the water like I did with the Hawaii Mars, standing before this engineering marvel was an unforgettable experience.

The Mars bombers were initially designed during WWII as long-range transport seaplanes. Only seven were built, and the war ended before their potential could fully be realized. Repurposed as water bombers, they found a second life battling forest fires, capable of carrying 7,200 gallons of water—a true feat of aviation innovation.

The Philippine Mars, the last of her kind, served in the fire-fighting role for decades, saving countless acres of forest. Though now retired, she stands as a tribute to ingenuity and resilience.

Being near this piece of history reminded me of the awe I felt watching the Hawaii Mars skim the water’s surface, a graceful yet powerful display. It’s bittersweet knowing the days of these giants are behind us, but their legacy continues to inspire.
