We’re pretty deep into February and I feel like I’m still operating in slow winter hibernation mode. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s normal for the season. Anyone else?

I’ve stopped putting much emphasis on New Years for a while now. For me, the new year begins in the spring when everything starts to come alive after a long winter. Despite that, I’ve managed to stick to a couple of my resolutions.

I’ve also been making intentional time to do photography for myself. When I was looking back on my 2025 folder I realized that the overwhelming majority of my photography was paid work and I had somehow missed many opportunities to play and create for me.

So here is one I took this week while on Gabriola Island! An evening long exposure at the beach made possible by

“A loaded WWII bomber departs RCAF Tofino on a routine antisubmarine patrol of Vancouver Island’s West Coast. Almost immediately after takeoff, the port-side engine begins to sputter before failing completely.
Armed with four 255 lb depth charges and hurtling through the dark night, the pilot is forced to make a quick decision that could mean life or death…”

“80 years later, the twisted wreckage of RCAF Canso 11007 has become a popular destination for visitors to the Pacific Rim National Park. I’ve long considered the Canso Bomber hike to be “low-hanging fruit” in terms of island adventures. The trail is relatively easy, especially now that rough-cut cedar planks have been laid through the most treacherous parts of the route, which meanders through boggy wetlands and rainforest.
No longer a well-kept secret, the Bomber Trail has been made famous through social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. During summer months, the Canso Bomber receives hundreds of visitors a day and, like anything abandoned in the woods, is sporting a thick coat of graffiti.”

Some scenes from the Commercial Street Night Market last week 📸

There is something special about a farmers market. It feels like a timeless absolute in the human story. In every civilization, there has been a central place for people to barter, trade, sell, and purchase their goods.

It occurred to me last week how important these markets are to our community. An age-old tradition that is well worth keeping alive. There is truly no better way to support local and come together.

Well, here it is: The official photos of Shipwreck Pizzas new and improved dining room featuring some Dylan Phillips Photography original pieces. To say I’m proud is an understatement. When I shot the Royston Wrecks last year I knew the photos were unique. I did some research and wrote my own piece about the wrecks, never anticipating the attention that would receive online. Thankfully they would end up being the perfect fit for Shipwreck Pizza in Ucluelet. I’m so happy with how these prints turned out and even more satisfied with how well they suit the space that is their new home.
If you find yourself in Ucluelet make sure you stop in at Shipwreck Pizza for a slice. The food is deadly 🤤

Amphitrite Lighthouse, Ucluelet BC

Sometimes you have to make the best you can with what you got and roll with the punches.
When I set off for this photo, a moody, foggy scene isn’t what I was expecting. It was beautiful and sunny everywhere else. It’s July, I want to capture photos that feel like summer.
Nothing wrong with a foggy lighthouses though 👍🏻
