These are the real moments-between the important but more predictable parts of the day. Those small looks of appreciation, tears, hugs and smiles.

These small moments are the ones I love to catch during a documentary wedding day. These are the moments you cannot plan or create!

The get ready

You can feel the excitement and anticipation!
The end of the night also tends to have the same excitement but the anticipation has melted into fulfillment 🧡

These two got ready next door to one another and met each other for their first look at the front door. No need for anything extra or fancy. Just them and their friends laughing and spending time getting ready just like you use to before any fun night out!

To invite or NOT invite your photog to the welcome dinner?

This is not a must by any means as sometimes the logistics just simply don’t work. When you’re able to, though, I have found this extremely beneficial for my clients and their loved ones to help them feel more present in their day and ability to ignore me!

As a documentary photographer I really aim to not interrupt any part of the day. I instead want to document evidence of how your day authentically unfolded

Few snaps from the Canon AE-1 today!

I was able to meet one of my couples L&K in Victoria’s Historic Chinatown- and you know what in all the years I’ve explore Vic I don’t recall ever walking down the very very historic Fan Tan Alley. I wasn’t 100% sure if any of these would come out so I didn’t end up ask L&K for a quick portrait… I regret it now!

So take this lesson from me- do it even if it fails

Okay onto this also historic rig! The AE-1 program with the classic 50mm lens. I’m excited to add this to the line up and throw some film in this baby for portraits this year!

And I was pleasantly surprised by this roll of 20yr old + expired Kodak Gold film! Shot at 80 ISO…Fridge stored vs family photo box stored like the last roll 😂

Proof you can just show up as who you are to a shoot with me and we will get absolute gems of you because documentary photography captures your energy, feelings and vibes!

This was a little meet in greet/engagement session that I always give as an add on option to couples as it’s a great way to meet before your big day! It helps ease any “get to know you” tension before we work with one another.

If couples have already had an engagement session then I always suggest an in person coffee shop meet and greet just to chat in person again to feel more comfortable so it’s like an old friend is showing up to your big day!

Moments like these! Warm sun kissed skin, squishy water soaked shoes and yummy post activities snacks 🧡

This is why documentary family photography is so valuable. It isn’t about perfect outfits or smiles… it’s about preserving where you are presently at as a family in this fleeting moment of time!

Years from now when you look back on these moments how much will you care exactly how you looked? Or will you be more interested in remembering how you FELT?!
