Well this morning was a big surprise. I definitely wasn't expecting to wake up to nearly a foot of fresh snow on the ground! It's great to see that Sproat Lake is looking a lot like winter, it's not a sight that happens very often.

Slowing time in pursuit of the simpler joys of life. 🌲

The warm crackle of a wood fire stove, vulnerable conversations and deep laughs with good friends, badass vegan charcuterie boards (minus the meat?), naturally aspirated diesel motors, monopoly deal, and of course: rain in February.

Sometimes life is better with less 🌲🌳

I guess you could say the locals here were pretty “stellar” 🦭

This herd of sea lions were quite wary of us. At its largest this group was about 20 strong and, as luck would have it, they barked at and I right from the best part of the break. After a very long stare down with these giant mammals, eventually the call was made that we wouldn’t be surfing much more the rest of the day and we packed it in to explore other nearby, empty beaches.

Still managed to catch a couple good ones before the locals kicked us out 🤷🏼‍♂️

If you haven’t seen my story already, I currently have my first ever public gallery showcasing my photography up at right now!

I’ll be at the brewery tonight from 6:30-9pm so if anyone would like to stop by, say hi, and check out some of my photographs in person, you’re more than welcome!

I’m extremely psyched with how this collection turned out and I hope other people can enjoy it as well. See you there! 🤙🏼

I was initially quite scared to see sea lions underwater while diving. While I’m the ocean, you feel the great vulnerability of being in a world that our human bodies are completely undesigned for.

Although I was initially freaked out by these large predatory creatures that navigate the waters so majestically, I quickly realized how curious and playful they seemed to be. Just as .baby.eggs_and_gravy and I were there to explore and discover the underwater world, these sea lions were there to do the same with us.

They’re danced around and swam playfully as we observed them. It felt like we had a private audience to an ocean ballet. I now wish they had stayed around longer, but before I could get my camera to snap a handful of photos, they disappeared back into the dark blue. Truly an experience I’ll never forget.

Couple of novelty waves in a blizzard the other week with ❄️ 🌊

Sometimes around Nanaimo the swell lines up just right and you’re blessed with some super fun surf in your own backyard. Love these kinds of days 🤙🏼 I think my eyes still have snow crystals in them 👁👁

To me, these scales represent the circle of life of our pacific coast. 🌊 🌲 From the orca and stellar sea lion, to the grizzly and bald eagle, to the human who depends on these wild creatures for sustenance and livelihood, to the river and forest who absorb the salmon’s decaying corpses: everything depends on the salmon, and the salmon depends on everything else.

Specifically: the salmon depends most on the human. They depend on the human to not over fish, to not log and destroy their spawning habitats, to not blockade and dam crucial lifeblood river systems, to not pollute their oceanic feeding grounds, and mostly: they rely on the human to protect from the human themself.

I’ve always been incredibly fascinated by wild pacific salmon. Learning about the thousands of km’s they travel to spawn and all the predators they must evade along their journey as a kid in school was mind blowing! They swim up waterfalls narrowly escaping the jaws of bears, only to die and pass on their vital nutrients once their last eggs have been laid. Having spent a season working at a fishing lodge this past summer, I feel I have a duty and a responsibility to give myself back to these providers. I don’t quite know what that looks like yet, I’ll be honest. But I’m very determined to continue honouring and respecting one of the most incredible species our planet is home to. 🐟

Where the glaciers meet the rivers. This was taken at the headwaters of the Fraser river near the border of BC and Alberta.

From here, this river will flow through the heart of BC, growing over the course of nearly 1,400km before depositing itself into the Pacific Ocean in Vancouver.

A couple weeks ago I went for a swim at a small river. The water was about 2.5 degrees, and even with a full wetsuit, booties, and gloves my body couldn’t help but shiver uncontrollably. I took a few photos under water and enjoyed the brisk chill.

The water was crystal clear and moving very slow which allowed me to explore the potholes and unique rock formations. This photo takes me back to that day. I think I’ll be forever connected to nature, specifically bodies of water.
