Three weeks together ❤️

It never really feels like it’s going by fast while you’re in it.

There are naps to work around, laundry waiting, snacks everywhere, someone needing you every five minutes.

And then you look back at a photo from a year ago and wonder when exactly everything changed.

The chubby hands got a little bigger.
The baby you carried everywhere started running ahead of you.
The ordinary little routines became things you’d give anything to experience one more time.

That’s why I photograph this part.

Not because it’s perfect.

Because it’s yours. And because you won’t get this exact version of them, or you, ever again.

The way they still fit in your arms.

The hand that automatically reaches for yours.

The wild hair. The belly laughs. The way your baby curls into you like that’s the only place in the world they belong.

These things feel so ordinary when you’re living them.

And then, somehow, they’re gone.

That’s what I want to photograph.

Not a perfectly behaved version of your family. Not everyone smiling at me at exactly the same time.

You. As you are, right now.

Because one day these photographs won’t just show you what your family looked like.

They’ll bring you back to how it felt to be here. 🤍

I don’t need your kids to sit still.

I don’t need everyone looking at the camera.

And I definitely don’t need your life to look perfectly put together.

Give me the cuddles, the belly laughs, the toddler who has absolutely no interest in my plans, the baby curled into your chest, the little in-between moments you barely notice anymore.

That’s the stuff I’m looking for.

Because someday, the photos that matter most won’t just show you what everyone looked like.

They’ll remind you what this little chapter of your life felt like.

If this feels like how you want to remember your family, I’d love to photograph your story.

If you’ve ever worried that your toddler won’t “cooperate” for photos, this is for you 😂 😅

We were shooting in a spot where lots of people walk their doggies, and he wanted to see ALL OF THEM (so did I if I’m being honest lol).

He also wanted to test out the lake water, and explore every corner, and basically do everything except whatever we suggested. 😅

It was also approximately 1 million degrees on this day, and this pregnant mama was just amazing through the whole session, despite the heat, and the craziness.

We prettily much let go of the idea that he would cooperate within the first 2 minutes and just went with it. We followed, looked for the doggies, went this way and that way as he commanded us to do. Mom picked him up and put him down 1000x.

And she thankfully trusted that I would still make beautiful pictures of this time for them together.

I think sometimes we put so much pressure on kids to behave a certain way for photos when really, especially at two, they’re just being exactly who they are.

You don’t need to somehow convince your toddler to become a different kid for an hour. Just bring me the one you have and let’s see what happens!

I don’t want to sound cheesy, but there’s something so meaningful about being invited into someone’s home over and over again.

Family photography is really intimate. You’re letting me into your home, trusting me with your kids, and letting me document your family as you really are, and that’s pretty amazing.

I think this was my 9th time photographing this family, which is kind of crazy to think about.

When I started as a photographer, I knew I wanted to photograph families. I don’t think I ever imagined that I would get to know some of you for years. That I’d watch your kids grow up, come back year after year, and make actual friendships along the way.

Every session is a collaboration between your life and my way of seeing it.

I’m rarely in the frame. But every image I make is me. The way I move through a room, what I notice, what pulls me in. I’m drawn to people, to the way they exist with each other when no one is asking them to perform.

This mirror caught me in the in-between. Present, but invisible. My job is to stay out of the way of the moment while not missing it. Because the moment belongs to you, I’m just there to make sure it doesn’t disappear.

I don’t think mothers realize how much of their children’s future memories are built in the smallest everyday moments that seem unimportant right now.

After nearly 17 years photographing families, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing motherhood in so many different forms. I’ve photographed exhausted new moms, joyful moms, overwhelmed moms, sentimental moms, healing moms, single moms, first-time moms, moms with babies suddenly taller than them.

And no matter what season they were in, one thing has always stayed the same, the way mothers love ❤️. In the comforting, the protecting, the worrying, the remembering, the carrying, and the showing up over and over again, even on the hard days.

I really think so much of what children carry with them for the rest of their lives is built in these ordinary moments that can feel so repetitive while you’re living them. The way you make them feel safe, loved, comforted, and at home in the world.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who are constantly giving so much of themselves to the people they love. I hope today you feel appreciated for all the things you do that so often go unnoticed 💛

The second to last slide is a photo of my mom and I in the 80s, and the last slide is just a tiny glimpse of some of the incredible mothers I’ve had the honour of photographing over the years.
