Let me tell you about my friend, Karen Irwin-Dennis
I've known Karen for more than 40 years. She's one of those warm, funny, quietly nurturing people who instantly puts you at ease. The kind of person who doesn't seek the spotlight, but absolutely deserves it.
Karen is the owner of Johnny Cakes Bakery, a home baking business named in honour of her son Johnny, whom she lost in 2006 after a six-year battle with brain cancer. In her own words, Karen says "Not a day goes by that I don't carry him with me", and you can feel that love woven through everything she creates.
One of my favourite moments from our session wasn't even a photograph. It was a framed display hanging in her kitchen containing the original be**er from her first KitchenAid mixer, gifted to her by her daughter. It even had a plaque marking its years of service. Such a simple thing, but it told me everything I needed to know about the love, family, and memories that live at the heart of this business.
You can see the heart she has invested in every cookie, every customer, and every fundraiser.
And speaking of cookies...
Karen sent me home with what I think was a toffee chip shortbread cookie. I am not exaggerating when I say it may have been one of the best cookies I have ever eaten.
Apparently baking really is her love language.
