Serengeti/Ngorongoro/Tarangire wildlife part 5: Wildebeest

The wildebeest migration is one of the main reasons people visit the Serengeti. The blue wildebeest or gnu is a species of antelope that occurs through much of eastern and southern Africa. The population in the Serengeti is the most famous, as over 1,000,000 animals make a large annual migration between the Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya to follow the rains. They do so together with zebras. We were fortunate to catch some of the migration near Seronera in the central Serengeti.

Seeing even smaller groups of wildebeest (and zebras) galloping across the savanna is quite a sight, and seeing large grazing herds, spread out as far as a the eye can see, is amazing. I imagined that this is what the large bison herds in the Canadian prairies would have looked like before settlers wiped out most of them

Serengeti/Ngorongoro/Tarangire wildlife part 4: Hippos.

The most dangerous animal in eastern Africa isn't a lion or leopard, but the hippo. It kills more people than any other species. During the day they hand out in large pods, keeping themselves cool in rivers and ponds, but at night they will wander up to 10km from the water to graze. They can be very aggressive and they will bite - hard, or just trample you with their 1300kg+ body. They are known to capsize boats as well.

We were lucky to see some on shore (at a respectful distance!) at sunrise one day

Ahhh, those African sunrises!

No trip to Tanzania is complete without a safari. After climbing Kili we took a six-day safari through Tarangire, Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti.

The sunrises are amazing. Taking a balloon safari at sunrise is even more special!

While it is possible to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in five or six days, the success rate on those routes is low due to the lack of time for acclimatization. On the other hand, the nine-day Northern Circuit is not just about reaching the 5895m high summit of the world's highest freestanding mountain. It is especially about experiencing the mountain from all sides and spending considerable time in all its climate zones, from rain forest at 2390m at the start of the trail to polar desert above 4200m.

The extra time allows for good acclimatization, making the summit push on day 8 a lot more enjoyable. Much of the circuit is also very lightly travelled, so one sees very few other hikers. Our little group of 6 hikers was even on our own for a couple of days.

It is an epic trek through amazing landscapes; highly recommended!

Vanishing ice

For many years I wanted to see the last remnants of the glacier ice on the summit of Kilimanjaro. Earlier this month we all made it to its 5895m high summit, which was amazing. But the best part of the climb for me was that while the others made their way down, K and I got to make a detour down to one of the few remnants of glacier ice near the summit with our great guide William Bwenje and one of the porters, Pascal.

To stand at 3 degrees from the equator touching glacial ice was very powerful. The precarious nature of the remaining ice reminded us how fast glaciers around the world are retreating. Just over a 100 years ago, the entire summit of Kili was covered by a glacier...

A great advantage of being at sea is that you tend to have clear views of the skies. Which can make for a beautiful spectacle when the clouds roll in. These photos from Eclipse Sound in the Torngat Mountains and Gros Morne National Park show how dramatically clouds can change within a few hours
