Welp. This is what happens when I see the same targeted ad no matter where I look …

And truthfully, if every targeted ad smells like this, I’m a-okay with it 🤣.

Oh man …

Today was the most Monday-est Wednesday ever 🤣

Waited four hours for a delivery that never showed. Called to follow up … nothing. Love that for me.

Eventually gave up, headed to the studio, and decided to make the most of it.

If you’ve been here a while, you know I love finding new Canadian brands to try (and obviously photograph before I enjoy them).

My shipment from Jakamo Coffee Concentrate had just arrived. Perfect timing… or so I thought.

Any time I try something new, I’ll usually shoot it, testing out ideas, play with lighting, you know … normal photographer behaviour 😅

But looking back at these?

I should’ve spent more time DRINKING the coffee than photographing it.

We’ve got: rogue reflections, lids not fully tamped down, shadows that aren’t quite shadowing, labels doing their own thing (parles-tu français?)

A real masterclass.

All that to say, it turns out even when the product is great, the visuals still matter - amirite?!

But on the bright side, when I finally do get home, I have a very good cup of coffee waiting.

No machine. No drive thru. Just simple, really good coffee.

If I were you, this is the first thing I’d fix …

Not your logo;
Not your website;
Not your packaging.

Your photos.

Because, truly, your visuals are doing more than just “looking pretty.”

They’re either building trust, showing the quality of your product, helping people understand what they’re buying or … they’re not 🤷🏻‍♀️

And if they’re not?

That’s where you’re losing people.

Before you post your next piece of content, ask yourself:

Does this build trust?
Does it clearly show the size?
Does it highlight texture?
What feeling does it create?

If you can’t answer those confidently, then that’s your sign.

Good product photography doesn’t just FILL your feed.
It helps do the selling FOR you.

And that’s the difference, my friends.

Went looking for a pistachio pun for this image from last weekend and couldn’t pick just one, so I’ll let you all weigh in … shell we begin?! (Yeah, I’ve already started 🤣).

• Shell yeah, it’s donut time!

• Always a little nutty.

• Shell-abrate the delicious things in life.

Which would you pick? And believe me when I say this one tasted pistachio-lutely amazing! (Okay, that was a bit of a stretch - sometimes I just hate myself 🤣).

A friend told me I HAD to try (don’t tempt me with a good time) … so obviously I went.

Well. I tried to go.
Turns out I picked their day off the first time. How very MEE.

Made it back today though, and before I could even think about eating one, I was already daydreaming how awesome they’d look up at the studio.

Because apparently this is just what happens now when I see a good product. Years ago I often would create content “just because”, highlighting awesome local businesses and honestly, I forgot how great it was for the soul.

And don’t worry, I will absolutely be eating these. You know, for research purposes, of course 😉

I grabbed a school boy six, so consider this your warning … a few will probably be making appearances here.

Tell me, are you picking the one that LOOKS the prettiest, or the one you think will TASTE the best? This was the perfect combination of both - ladies & gents, the PB&J donut.

I have seen a ton of businesses experiment lately with AI created images on Instagram (and elsewhere), and honestly, I get it. It’s fast, it’s accessible and usually, it’s a lot more affordable (I don’t think that’s unreasonable for a commercial photographer to admit that 🫠).

But something I’ve also noticed lately is the growing trend of folks who simply just don’t trust it. And I suppose I can see both sides of that.

AI CAN create and image, but does it really understand you and/or your products?

With TRUST being such a huge part of how the general public chooses what to purchase online, I have to wonder what, if any, effect using an AI image would have.

78% of online shoppers want to see how a product can be integrated into their everyday life. And 90% of online buyers say quality of image is most crucial in their decision to purchase. But in today’s marketplace, does that still hold true?

This morning I sat down and gave AI a prompt to recreate an image of mine. I gave it very clear descriptions of everything in the image, including colours etc. This is what it came up with (second slide).

I’ll admit, at first glance, they’re fairly close. But looking closer you may notice some oddities. But what hit me most was the difference in the actual product - the macarons. I gave very specific instructions for the colour of the outside and filling and regardless of that, it gave me a pile of macarons, none of which matched my instructions.

So at the end of the day, I wonder if while I can absolutely see the benefits, are we missing something with AI imagery? The look, the feel, the intention behind each and every product a business works so very hard to create?

I truly don’t know.

What are YOUR thoughts?

They’ve officially launched their summer collection so I can now share a little sneak peek from a recent session with a brand new client.

lunu-luxe came in with a clear vision, and packaging that DESERVED to be shown off.

From the start, this was about getting the balance right:

Clean, elevated visuals;
Soft, intentional details; and,
Letting the product (and those ingredients) do the talking.

Because when you’re working with blends like jojoba, coconut, vitamin E, and meadowfoam, the goal isn’t to over-style … it’s to make it feel as good as it actually is.

This is always my favourite kind of collaboration:
A strong vision + thoughtful ex*****on = images that actually *work* for the brand.

More from this one coming soon - stay tuned.

Curious … are you drawn to more minimal, ingredient-focused visuals or something a little bolder?
