Close up image of a Beaver.

North America’s largest rodent, known as an “ecosystem engineer” for building dams, canals, and lodges from sticks and mud, creating wetlands that benefit many other species.

This isn’t a great photo, but yesterday morning while I was out shooting, another photographer pointed out the call of an American Bittern. At first, neither of us could spot it. After a few minutes of listening and searching, I finally noticed the slightest movement while it was calling.

The bird was incredibly well camouflaged, sitting deep in the wetland foliage. I could barely see it through my lens, and it was so hidden that subject detection was useless. I ended up switching to focus peaking and manual focus, which was still extremely difficult. I must have taken close to 300 shots hoping one would turn out sharp enough, this was the best of the bunch, and even then it’s not very good.

Still, I’m really happy just to have seen one at all, especially since they’re apparently very rare in this area.

I also managed to capture a short video of it preening itself.

Perched, watching… then gone in a blink.
Belted kingfisher doing what it does best, it sits still just long enough to make you work for the shot, then vanish mid-frame, however I managed to pick it back up as it was hovering from a distancing.
