Amanda Cashin Photography A unique view of Nova Scotia's beauty, nature and culture. “If you change the way you look at things the things you look at change”.

I love that quote by self-help author Wayne Dyer. It is actually a lesson I learned early in life from my favorite fictional character Anne Shirley, and it is how I approach photography. I am instinctively drawn to the small details – the chipped and worn paint, the rusty hinges, the tiny lines of a leaf in the spring or the reflections in the calm Atlantic waters. There is beauty and stories in e

verything around us and I am most excited when I can share that with people through my photos. I grew up in a tiny rural community on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. I didn’t have a camera but I remember taking photos in my mind –seeing something and appreciating the lines, the light, or the colors and framing the perfect composition. I was so lucky to be surrounded by the many colors and patterns of nature, and by the effects of the harsh Atlantic weather that created the most wonderful designs on old wood and on sandy beaches. I was also lucky to have parents that took me clam digging or berry picking where I could come to appreciate our connection with nature, and all its tiny details. I spent a lot of time in my dad’s boat as a child, enjoying the sparkle of the sun on the water. I love to share the rural culture I know and love so well with others through my photography. I haven’t been trained in photography. I am not even a great technical photographer if I’m being honest, but I am told I have a gift. I blush and accept the compliment. “You always make the simplest things look so beautiful – you amaze me every time”. It is an honor to have something so special said about my work. I'm so pleased to have a small part in this event :) My photography will be featured in the tote bags which will be provided to all attendees.
I'm looking forward to connecting with everyone who will be attending, and celebrating women who run businesses, big or small on International Women's Day this March. If you are, or know someone who is, a female entrepreneur in Nova Scotia please consider attending or spreading the word.

(The event is advertised as a market but not the typical kind, as it is not a shopping event and everything you receive as an attendee is included in the cost of the event, which is only $35)

Tickets available here:

Craig has passed away, and it is not just the loss of an elephant. My heart is breaking for all of the people who worked so tirelessly and with such incredible passion to have kept him safe from poachers all these years. Craig died of natural causes, which as a big tusker at the age of 54 is pretty incredible and it is because of their dedication to him and his safety that he lived so long, and so well. It is one thing to keep an animal safe in a conservancy, but Craig was kept safe to roam free in the wild without gates or barriers, which would have incredible challenges.

My heart also breaks for all of the guides who shared Craig with thousands, maybe millions of people over his life span. And I am heart-broken for Kenya, particularly Amboselli, today.

Craig represented what you can accomplish if you put your heart and soul into something. For those who worked so hard to ensure he was safe, and who were, and continue to be dedicated to and passionate about the importance of education about wildlife, wildlife ecosystems, and conservation, thank you, and my absolute deepest sympathy.

Craig was an incredible elephant. His tusks after over 5 decades were beautiful with minimal damage, indicating his gentle strength, and I am so thankful to have spent time in his calm presence multiple times.

On the safari trips I've been on, photographers come away with National Geographic level images of all of the animals we see. I've met incredibly talented people, and it has been a gift to share space with them.
I will never create those kind of images though...for lack of skill mostly, and lack of interest in that style of photography on some level.

All of these elephants in this image are not facing the same way and you can't see them all in the shot. They are just being elephants in the savannah. That is safari. It is unpredictable and forces one to go with the flow (even if someone like myself does not easily go with the flow).

There is more to this image though. For me safari, especially in Amboseli, has such a unique and magical feeling. The ground is dry and it is dusty, there is a haze of light mixed with the dust, and the air is hot and feels as though it holds magic...history, memories, peace, joy, even tragedy...it holds all of those things but feels incrediblely light. This image has been edited to attempt to reflect that feeling.

I am so lucky to witness safari, and to come away with these memories I hope you enjoy. Maybe they inspire some of you to want to experience safari someday day too.

You can see this and other images in person at Surfside Studio Tour September 28th. I'll be stop #2

Oh, hi there! My 2026 calendars are now available in my online shop, and also at Made in the Maritimes Artisan Boutique Inc. in Halifax.

This year my wood stands are sourced through LakeCity Works, a Nova Scotia small business, which supports people living with barriers to mental health; helping them build on their strengths, foster wellbeing, and access training, work experience and employment. I'm thrilled to support this work, and I hope you are too.

My refill pages are available only on my online shop, visit link below to get yours.

My recent trip to Kenya taught me a few things about slowing down, and about finding appreciation in things that force us to move at a slower pace.
After reading it I'd love to hear from you about what might have slowed you down recently, and how you found something to appreciate in the process.
