Bees alone pollinate roughly one third of all the food humans eat, while trees absorb carbon dioxide, regulate rainfall and produce the oxygen that every living creature depends on. Clean water sustains every cell in the human body and underpins every ecosystem on Earth. Without these three natural systems functioning properly, no amount of economic wealth, technology or infrastructure could sustain human civilisation. Scientists and ecologists increasingly argue that protecting biodiversity and clean water is not an environmental issue but the most fundamental economic and survival issue humanity faces.
