“Marco” was a South African penguin
who lived as a beloved mascot and free-roaming resident at the marina in Trieste (norther Adriatic coast of Italy) from 1953 to 1985.
It was brought to Trieste from South Africa in 1953 by crew members aboard the motor ship Europa.
Lifestyle: Due to early imprinting, Marco considered humans his family, wandering freely along the waterfront (Rive), visiting the fish market, swimming in public pools, and interacting with locals.
Duration: Lived in and around the aquarium for over 32 years. (Note: It was later discovered after death that Marco was actually a female).
Legacy: Commemorated in local books (such as Roberto Covaz’s Marco the penguin of Trieste), children's tours, and a bronze statue by Giorgio Delben near Molo Pescheria depicting “Marco” with a young girl
