Please visit the AMAZING new in Marysville beside the ferry dock on Wolfe Island this long weekend - it's out of this world!!!

Congratulations to the wonderful Piercy family on this exciting adventure! is an incredible carpenter who has spent the winter doing fantastic renovations to the old Wolfe Island Grill and his son has created an phenomenal new menu which is beyond delicious!!! Spicer's Dockside Grill is a great destination accessible by both water (ample dock space) and the free Wolfe Island Ferry which leaves Kingston every hour. Visiting Wolfe Island is a terrific way to kick off summer 2024!!!

Part of a personal project series of “heel flips” shot around the world. This was shot at the Salton Sea (near Bombay Beach)
in the Anza-Borrego desert in the middle of summer under the noon-day sun at 111 degrees Fahrenheit. Equipment overheated and stopped working after a couple of minutes but I managed to get a few frames in!

This was a tough shoot to pull off technically due to the conditions. I needed a ton of power just past noon in the California desert. I used a leaf-shutter medium format mirrorless camera to be able to get full power out of my flashes (rather than High Speed Sync which would have reduced the effective power had I used a DSLR). I placed two Profoto B10 Pluses on stands on each side of my subject, maxed out their power and placed an OCF Magnum Reflector on each flash for an additional 1.8 stops of light. The sheer power of these portable flashes allowed me to shoot at f/10 and 1/640 s at ISO 100. The resultant image quality made all the effort worth every bead of sweat!

This location was HOT but amazing!!!

The super nice (and crazy brave!) recently finished 29th place in the first Worldchampionship of 2023 in Sharjah, UAE put on by . Here she is doing an invert in the deep end of the pool in Bali a few weeks ago.

Using a fisheye lens has its pros and cons – the pros definitely outweigh the cons but one huge con is it doesn’t always allow the viewer to really see how incredibly deep some of the pools are – Alisa was looking at about a 12 foot drop straight down onto concrete if she didn’t land this. Amazing skater and an even more amazing person!

Part of an ongoing series paying homage to the inspirational Apollo 11 mission.

A huge thank you to this wonderful subject - Kingston friends may recognize this fabulous model! Right after this shoot we watched the Leafs come back from 4-1 in the third period so he may just have to wear the spacesuit for the rest of the playoffs…!

Post processing is a crazy thing – it can so completely change the feel of an image. I’d LOVE your opinion on which of the next five images are your favourite. Thank you!

Image six is a "behind the scenes" showing the lights, smoke machine and associated hoopla used for this image!

“Airlandi!” The gravity-defying literally flew through the air about 10’ higher than the coping of this 14’ monster of a vert ramp during a jaw-dropping session in July 2022. It was an incredible privilege to see this world-class athlete take flight! Shot in San Diego, California.

One of these fit young fellows just had a very big birthday - happy 60th to the anonymous cyclegod!

Shot this whilst hanging out of the back of a moving car. Blasted a bunch of big lights from the open tailgate and dragged the shutter to get the motion blur. Basically, held on for dear life! Lots of fun with some great guys!

I had the fantastic good fortune to meet the amazing Alexandre Désilets through a mutual friend whilst in the Dominican Republic recently. Alex is a deeply thoughtful, caring, interesting and wildly talented musician/artist/auteur/compositeur/interprète. We connected immediately and decided to head out to a cave early one morning and take a few photos (as one does!).

I am embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t heard Alex’s music before we met. He sings in French and is from Quebec, Canada. This had been my loss. His music is absolutely beautiful, and despite the fact that we sadly don’t speak French, his music’s transcendence is such that it actually doesn’t matter! His deep archive of songs going back about 15 years has been constantly playing since we returned home to Canada. Please check it out – you’ll be so glad you did!

One of the reasons I love photography is that it’s a wonderful excuse to spend a couple of hours getting to know some incredible people. Meeting Alex is a fabulous example of this. I deeply enjoyed our conversation about life, kids, culture, various causes, etc., etc., etc. Thank you Alex for your music, and your friendship.

The first image of this series is “photoshopped”. For me, it represents Alex’s thoughtful contemplation of nature. The second image is the original, non-photoshopped version. I’d love to hear which of these you like best (I can’t decide!). Subsequent images were also taken in “La Cueva” near Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic.

King Regent/Penglingsir of Pemecutan, Bali, Indonesia. The King Regent was kind enough to extend to us a rare invitation to the Inner Courtyard of this beautiful Puri (Palace) to take a portrait of three generations of his family.

This image was shot as a formal portrait for a friend’s book project on the Royal Families of Indonesia.

1st image: Inner Courtyard of the Puri (Palace)
2nd image: Zoomed in - kids will be kids! It’s pretty incredible how much one can zoom in with this equipment - the image quality is truly amazing!!

Part of a personal project series of “heel flips” shot around the world. A heel flip isn’t a particularly advanced skateboarding trick, but it has the advantage of being able to be done anywhere. Skaters tend to like images where the board is captured upside down and parallel to the ground, and where there is some height. Some of these images achieve this, and some of them don’t. But all of these are in absolutely breathtaking locations throughout South East Asia.

Each of these images were shot on the new X2D in quite demanding conditions – heat, extreme humidity, oftentimes sand, etc. A key benefit for me of the mirrorless X2D is that it uses leaf shutter lenses which allow flashes to be fired as fast as 1/2,000 of a second without sacrificing flash power. This allows one to capture action with a precision that simply can’t be achieved with DSLRs. One or two lights were used in each shot to light the subject and to create a crisp image.

2nd image: in the ruins of an old Nikki Beach Club in Phuket, Thailand.
3rd image: sunset, Bang Tao Beach, Thailand.
4th image: “Pretty Poison” skatepark, located in a rice paddy field in Canggu, Bali, Indonesia.
5th image: “Xtreme” skatepark, East Coast Park, Singapore.
6th image: Layan Beach, Thailand.
7th image: in the ruins of an old Nikki Beach Club in Phuket, Thailand. Liked this one in Black & White…

Would love to hear which one is your favourite!

Sometimes one gets to meet and photograph the next generation of world class athlete. We were lucky enough to do just that when we met thirteen year old Kruiz Foster ( ) from Australia in Bali.

We were actually photographing someone else, a strong technical skater on the coping (backside smiths, etc.), but one who wasn’t doing any tricks in the air, and we had amassed a bit of an audience of young skateboarders. As our original session went on, the kids began to whisper "Kruiz is here - go get him! Tell him there’s a photographer. OMG, he's getting his PADS - this is gonna be good!!”

It was! He shot through the air, higher and higher. Crazy grab after crazy grab - frontside, backside, stalefish, etc. He never seemed to get tired – he just got better and better! We ended up photographing him a couple of times, each session more incredible than the last!

These were all taken with a fisheye lens (thanks again to the incredible for reminding me to use this old thing!) and two lights (it probably should have been 3 lights). Zooming in to one of the images revealed the first of this series, the second image is the fully zoomed out version. Sometimes the audience was almost as much fun as Kruiz's incredible skating, as zooming from the third photo to the fifth image here shows.

I’m still going through the images we shot – there are so many amazing photos. Here are a few to get started – thanks Kruiz – looking forward to watching you on TV rippin it up one day soon!!
