Part of a personal project series of “heel flips” shot around the world. A heel flip isn’t a particularly advanced skateboarding trick, but it has the advantage of being able to be done anywhere. Skaters tend to like images where the board is captured upside down and parallel to the ground, and where there is some height. Some of these images achieve this, and some of them don’t. But all of these are in absolutely breathtaking locations throughout South East Asia.
Each of these images were shot on the new X2D in quite demanding conditions – heat, extreme humidity, oftentimes sand, etc. A key benefit for me of the mirrorless X2D is that it uses leaf shutter lenses which allow flashes to be fired as fast as 1/2,000 of a second without sacrificing flash power. This allows one to capture action with a precision that simply can’t be achieved with DSLRs. One or two lights were used in each shot to light the subject and to create a crisp image.
