Throwback to the 1989 World Cup Final in Tampa, Florida! Following three consecutive top ten World Cup Final finishes from 1985 to 1987, including a second-place finish in 1986, Canada’s Ian Millar and Big Ben made history by becoming the first pair to win two consecutive World Cup Finals in 1988 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and in 1989 in Tampa.
One of Canada’s most beloved show jumpers, Big Ben made three Olympic appearances, was a Pan American Games double gold medalist and had over 50 major Grand Prix titles. He triumphed against the odds, overcoming two colic surgeries and a terrible highway trailer accident. In 1994, Big Ben was officially retired and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, making him the second non-human athlete to ever receive this honor (the first was racehorse Native Dancer). At the age of 23, Big Ben was euthanized at the University of Guelph after suffering a severe bout of colic. He is buried at Millar Brooke Farm in Ontario.
