Kelowna Moms CoverGirl Makeover Photography Experience
My Mom and I are best friends. We do everything together. I even convinced her to do a Mother-Daughter photoshoot with me once. We were so excited! We went shopping together and made a girls day out planning our wardrobe together. We got our nails done, hair done, had lunch and wine, and of course, picked matching outfits
We had our consultation with our photographer and we got even more excited. But when we had our photoshoot it was a bit lackluster and we felt kinda uncomfortable. I just shrugged it off and waited excitedly for our photos. But again like the portrait session, we were a bit disappointed. It’s not that they were bad photos, it's just that at the time being a bigger girl right after having my 2nd child, I was really looking forward to feeling beautiful.
But, when I got my photos I had been photoshopped to such an extent that I looked more like somebody half my size, and the pose we were in looked a bit awkward for us. All I could think was, if these photos were only for me and the photographer had to change me so much, what I actually looked like was unacceptable. Instead of feeling wonderful with a glow-up, it made me feel worse about myself. And although my Mom and I got to spend some time together, it definitely wasn't what we both had in mind.
I had always been drawn to photography and it was my favorite hobby for many years. But it was at that very point when I decided I would move behind the camera and learn how. Which techniques to use to deliver the quality of photos I was expecting along with the experience I had dreamed of having with my Mom.
I started doing research and realized that there are not too many photographers out there that show off real women in their portfolios. It's all models or really young fit people. It's not a wonder that as a bigger girl, I wasn't overly satisfied with the portraits we had been given. You can’t pose, light, and angle real-life women the same way you do with models. What you see on the cover of magazines is perfectly curated by a whole team of beauty and style specialists. Everyone has the ability to look polished like a CoverGirl when they get the same kind of treatment. That's when I decided that would be exactly what I offered my clients
I spent the next year and a half going to a private Arts & Technology college learning how to be a professional photographer. I also attended very specialized classes that teach how to direct and pose women of all ages, shapes, and sizes to look their absolute best without having to perform Photoshop surgery in the editing phase. I then learned special editing techniques to keep my clients looking as real as possible while taking care of small blemishes, and shadows, and adding a bit of polish. Yes, photos have to look beautiful but they still need to look like the person who posed for the picture too. Finally, I went out and put together the most incredible beauty team to work with me. I was all set to run the full Sterling Silver Luxxury Portraits experience.
The first person I had in mind to snap portraits of, was my incredible Mother. I was so excited to share this experience with her because she has always supported everything I did. My sister was there watching our Mom while she got all Glammed Up while I prepared the sets and equipment. I had custom-selected specific poses that directly correlated with each outfit to show off her very best angles.
Prior to that day, Mom and I designed her entire wardrobe selection with lovely accessories and stunning makeup and hair to match. Now the team and I were about to bring everything together to give Mom the beautiful portraits of herself she would love and want to share with my sister and me.
She came walking onto set in her first outfit smiling so big that you could tell she felt beautiful, almost like she floated into the room. I remember thinking at that moment, “Wow, my Mom is so beautiful” and now I have the chance to show her how I see her. I gave her a quick lesson in following my posing instructions, so things would feel easy and comfortable during her shoot as I directed her. I wanted her to really enjoy this. I walked my Mom through each pose making the appropriate adjustments in her position to get it just right. She was laughing constantly and kept telling me how much fun she was having.
She changed into her second outfit, and I switched the set out while the LUXX Beauty team did some quick touch-ups. We worked our way through the rest of her session choreography sneaking in a few quick remote-controlled shots of me, my big sister, with my Mom at the end.
We all laughed, listened to music, and had the most wonderful time. Afterward, we all went out for a girls' night out and continued the incredible vibe of feeling gorgeous together.
Two weeks later I had my Mom over for a glass of wine to reveal her finished portraits to her. The one thing you have to know about my Mom is that she is an alpha lady. She is always blunt, strong, and in control, while having a heart of gold. So when I tell you that as she saw her images appear on the screen one after another she silently cried with a smile, you know she was experiencing something so overwhelmingly positive that it just flowed everywhere.
She smiled at me and said, “Silver, OMG I have never seen myself this way before! I never thought I could look cute or sassy like that, and I'm in awe of that one of us all together. It's amazing”. And “Oh wow that one there….. I look gooooood lol. What a special and wonderful thing to have.” Mom hugged me and thanked me over and over again telling me she loved her portraits and that I was going to make so many women happy just like I had made her feel. We were finally able to have the experience and photos together that we had always wanted and I couldn't have been happier.
I have a very personal connection and understanding to just how important it is to have beautiful portraits of yourself and those you love. There is a very real, empowering impact it can have on people to see themselves in fun new ways while feeling beautiful. The photos I took of my Mom over 11 years ago still appear in my marketing material. They are some of my absolute favorite portraits I have ever taken and I cherish them deeply.
The cherry on top of the whole thing is that I got to give her that gift of confidence and share the experience alongside her. To this day, it is still one of my absolute fondest memories. The day we finally got our perfect Mother-Daughter Shoot together. Even better is the fact that there are incredible pictures to help us remember in vivid detail whenever we want.
And now…. I get to offer YOU that same experience with your Mom! It is so incredibly important to exist in photographs. Let me help design the portraits and the experience you get to share with your family and have an amazing time doing it! Your family will cherish those portraits and memories for years to come. I know I have.
The best part is we are located right by you in Kelowna BC.
