Even the best suspension in the world will snap if you overload the trailer and hit a bad stretch of washboard road. We are all carrying weight. Financial pressure, the grind of the circuit, providing for the family, maintaining the farm. It gets heavy. And in this culture, we’re taught to just bear down and haul it alone. But asking someone to help distribute the weight isn’t weakness; it’s just smart logistics. You don’t have to pull the load by yourself.

We are talking about the real weight of the road over on the website today. Hit the link in the bio to read the latest entry of Grit & Grace. emiacstudio.ca

If the check engine light comes on in the rig, you don’t just put a piece of black tape over it and keep hauling. You pull over, pop the hood, and figure out what’s wrong before it leaves you stranded on the side of the QEII. So why do we do exactly that with our own heads? Ignoring the warning signs—the anger, the exhaustion, the isolation—doesn't make them go away. It just guarantees a bigger breakdown later.

Stop driving blind. Talk to someone. Read more about protecting the mind behind the chutes over on The Journal: emiacstudio.ca

You can’t fix a fence by ignoring the broken wire. You have to walk the line, find the weak spot, and put in the work to mend it before the whole herd gets loose. Your mind operates the exact same way. We spend so much time fixing our gear, our trucks, and our property, but we let our own mental health fray until it snaps. June is Men's Mental Health Month. Start walking your own fence line. Check in on your buddies. Mend the weak spots.

PROTECTING THE MINDS BEHIND THE CHUTES. 🛡️🧠

I’m going to be completely honest here. I’m not a doctor, and I’m not a corporate PR guy. I’m just an independent creator hauling a trailer across the circuit, looking through a lens, and paying attention. And we need to have a serious, straight-up conversation about what is happening to our athletes.

In rodeo, getting your "bell rung" is treated like a badge of honor. Over the decades, the sport did a great job engineering flak jackets to protect ribs, lungs, and hearts from immediate trauma. Those vests save lives. But we are completely neglecting the armor required for the hardware that keeps these athletes alive in the long haul. The biggest killer in this sport isn't a punctured lung on a Friday night—it's the slow, quiet, mental and emotional breakdown of the brain over the next ten years.

From the financial walls independent contractors face when paying for their own care, to the need for advanced gear like the 100X Series helmets and Kapsul Tech whiplash protection, it’s time to talk about the solutions. We need a unified safety net—a dedicated, private lifeline—available to every competitor, whether they are riding in High School Rodeo, the LRA, the FCA, or the CPRA.

We can’t take the danger out of rodeo—that’s what makes the sport what it is. But we can stop sending our people into the dirt without armor for their minds.

MORE THAN JUST A RODEO. IT'S A CITY-WIDE TAKEOVER. 🎡🐎

When you pull onto the grounds for the Leduc Black Gold Pro Rodeo, you realize instantly that this committee operates on an entirely different level. It’s not just about what happens in the dirt—it's a $3 million economic engine, a 130-booth Trade Fair, a massive parade down 50th Street, and a midway.

But the absolute heartbeat of the weekend? The Rodeo of Smiles. Watching the committee go above and beyond to create a safe, meticulously planned environment for kids with special needs is a profound reminder of what this Western community is truly built on.

Unfortunately, the weekend wasn’t without its deeply frustrating roadblocks from the CPRA regarding my media access. But I refused to let that ruin the event or put the committee at financial risk. Instead, I put the cameras away and volunteered to work security. You do what you have to do to support the people who are doing things right.

And Leduc is doing everything right.

THE DANCE AT THE END OF THE RIDE. 🪶

To the thousands of people in the grandstands, it looks like a standard celebration of surviving eight seconds on two thousand pounds of bucking muscle. But when you stand behind the chutes and actually listen to Keian speak, you realize that his dance in the dirt has nothing to do with adrenaline.

"At the end of every bull ride, I dance for my people, my past loved ones—my grandpa, my dad, my grandma. I carry their last names with pride."

This is, without a doubt, one of the most raw, unfiltered interviews I have done. We talked about the forgotten history of the first cowboys, the absolute, unbroken brotherhood of the locker room, and the brutal, hard-fought battle to overcome addiction.

Keian isn't just riding for a buckle. He is carrying an entire generation on his back, proving to the youth watching him that there is a way out of the darkness.

"It’s okay to be different, but find that difference and use it to your advantage. Be a sharp edge on a blade, and persevere in a career that’s worth living for."

THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH BEHIND THE PAINT. 🚨

He’s a 10-time Entertainer of the Year, a 30-year Calgary firefighter, and an absolute master of the arena dirt. From the chutes here at Leduc to the Las Vegas NFR, and all the way across the globe to the massive crowds of the Sydney Royal Easter Show in Australia, the entire rodeo world knows his name.

But when I sat down in the trailer with Dennis Halstead, the conversation went far beyond the barrel.

We talked about the brutal mental toll of the road, the undeniable brotherhood behind the chutes, and the heavy Friday afternoon in Tisdale when the Humboldt Broncos tragedy meant the funniest man in rodeo didn't tell a single joke.

This isn't just about surviving the 8-second battles or making 8,000 people scream. This is about the profound heart, empathy, and grace of the Western community.
