We have had Eastern Phoebe's at our place breeding now for about 5 years. Every April a pair returns and it looks like they are feeding young again. Can you see the ant? They are very hardy fly catchers and I have seen them feeding on the horses dung heap in cold weather!

The other is a Song Sparrow on an apple tree not far from the Phoebe.

You cant go wrong with a visit to a Nova Scotia Nature Trust property on a misty late spring morning. 50 species of birds today. This is the floodplain forest downstream from Glenelg. I think I saw the largest Oak I have ever seen in Nova Scotia. Greatful for all the work the Nature Trust does to protect the remaining Nova Scotia wild places.

Tiny little acrylics, 3x3 inches.

There's something intimate about making these little works on watercolour paper. I typically start with a single brush stroke that doesn't represent anything and work off of that initial mark, building the idea as I go. So in a sense the painting develops its self, each new mark making a contribution and making way for the next mark. The possibilities are endless, colour, form, texture, line .. this is the part I love, getting to decide consciously or unconsciously what comes next until the painting is resolved. They are then laminated to gessoed panel, varnished and a little hanger placed on the back.
