I overthought every shot. I was super self conscious. I didn’t feel at ease at all. I was hyper aware that I probably looked like a cliche white girl tourist with an expensive camera. And layer all of that with anxiety about whether we were mugging targets. That’s not a great recipe for coming back with anything substantial in street photography. When Joarla walks into her old childhood bedroom today, she’s not there to sort through her childhood possessions; she’s there for quality control. She used to call this colonial building home but now it houses her family’s larimar production factory.

She moves about between the rooms with the artisans, picking out stones, checking brilliance, measuring settings, deciding on finishing touches - she does it all knowing that this is where her family’s business started and has continued to grow.

Inside this small space, her tiny pieces are crafted by the hands of men who have worked for the Caridad family for years. Together they’re committed to protecting larimar, stewarding it well, and elevating its status from a simple rock to a prized Caribbean gem.

When Joarla Caridad moved to London to study she missed home. Not just people and friends. But the emblems that are at the centre of Dominican culture.

The ocean.
Baseball.
Candy.

So instead of sitting in this homesickness she used that emotion to build her jewelry line.

Swimming pools. Baseball stitching. Childhood sweets. All of these pieces crafted with the Dominican stone called Larimar.
Each piece is a tribute to Dominican culture and every pendant, ring and bracelet is carved into this ocean-like stone that can only be found on this Caribbean island.

Honouring Joarla and the work she is doing to honour her country’s heritage was a highlight of my latest trip to the Dominican.

Larimar is this gorgeous blue stone that you can only find in the Dominican. It truly looks like it came right out of the ocean. I’ve always loved this stone, but last month I got an inside look at the family that has shaped the history of the Larimar in the Dominican.

The Caridad family, and especially their patriarch Jorge, have dedicated their lives to protecting larimar, investing in the artisans and the miners who work with the gem, and elevating the status of the stone.

And today Jorge's daughter Joarla is charging forward, establishing this iconic gem in the luxury jewelry market all the while shaping it into Dominican cultural icons.

I'm sending love to the families who are saying goodbye to the home they thought would be their forever home, only to find that life has other plans.

Before We Go is a documentary photography project created for that tender season between what was and what comes next. It's an opportunity to honour the memories held within a home before a family moves on.

The project isn't about the house itself so much as the memories that unfolded there—the birthday parties, the height marks on the doorframe, the backyard bunkie getaway. It's a way of acknowledging the emotional weight a place can carry and giving a meaningful goodbye to a home that helped shape your family story.

Your kids won't remember the scuffs on the cupboards, the garden that never bloomed on time, or the bathroom reno that wasn't ever quite finished. But they will remember the trees.

Those giant ones they climbed up over and over again because getting to one branch higher makes a kid feel like they are on top of the world.

Before We Go is a documentary photography experience for families preparing to say goodbye to a beloved home. It's about preserving the special nooks that shaped your family before the boxes are packed, the rooms are emptied, and the keys are handed over.

Because a home is a place where ordinary moments become lifelong memories.

Homes aren't just dwellings for your body. They're dwellings for your heart too. And when it's time to say goodbye, the grief can be heavy. That's why I created Before We Go. It's my tribute to the family home. And I am grateful for the families that invite me into their last days in a home.
