Iāve been a professional photographer for 16+ years. I own more cameras and lenses than I care to admit⦠probably close to $60,000 worth of gear.
And yet⦠some of my favourite photos of my own family were taken on my old iPhone 14 with a $20 tripod and a little Bluetooth remote.
Are they perfect? Nope.
One kid blinked. One refused to smile. Someone got their hair pulled. There was definitely a fight. š
But thatās kind of the point.
I donāt do these little cellphone photo shoots because Iām trying to create perfect family photos. I do them because theyāre an excuse for us to spend an hour together.
We take a few pictures, skip stones, play with the metal detector, chase each other around, and somehow those evenings end up being some of my favourite memories.
When I was growing up, there arenāt a lot of photos of me. Itās something Iāve always wished I had more of.
So maybe thatās why I do this now.
I want my girls to grow up knowing they were photographed not because everything was perfect⦠but because they were loved. Because they mattered enough for us to stop what we were doing and say, āLetās remember this.ā
Photos arenāt really about what you looked like.
Theyāre proof that you were here. That you belonged. That someone loved you enough to make sure youād have something to look back on one day.
And honestly⦠I think thatās worth way more than perfect.
