Out of six nights in Newfoundland earlier this year, only one delivered truly clear skies. I planned on shooting that night, but I didn't have a set plan, if that makes any sense!

These shots were taken from the top (and below) of the Nanny's Hole Loop trail below Long Point Lighthouse in Crow Head, NL they look out over a small cluster of islands—home to numerous seabirds—sitting under a star-filled sky.

Last night, the stars truly aligned — the clear weather, new moon, and my schedule allowed me to head out for some astrophotography.

At around 2:00 AM, while hiking back along Clam Harbour Beach from my initial shooting location, I caught a glimpse of the Milky Way core glowing vividly against the perfectly still, receding tide. I immediately stopped, threw down the tripod, aligned the tracker, and started shooting. There is nothing quite like the absolute stillness of the Eastern Shore in the dead of night.

A northern gannets soaring over the sheer cliffs of Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland. Every year, tens of thousands of these majestic birds return here to nest—this one was hard at work bringing back fresh seaweed for this year’s home.

Spent two mornings and an evening here this past June just watching these soaring dinosaurs do their thing.

A small drop of photos taken last week in Twillingate. From the shoreline this icebergs was impressive. From 100 metres up, their true shape—and the brilliant turquoise water wrapped around them—came into view. The tour boat steaming into frame was the final piece, showing the true scale.

Threading the needle.
Between a rising Milky Way core and a waxing moon, the window was small—but the conditions finally lined up. It was a rare, perfectly calm, and clear night at Grand Desert Beach. Because lobster season was in full swing, it took quite a few frames to track the sky while managing the dancing boat lights on the water.

Blend of a 5-frame tracked sky with a single long exposure for the foreground.
