FRIDAY FAVE from 2011: Morning, Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Canada
You don’t need to be a morning person to get successful landscape photographs, but it sure helps. There is a newness to mornings: the air is cool, the light and colours are fresh, as is the natural world around us, having recovered from the previous day. Promise and hope linger with opportunity for a great day ahead.

FRIDAY FAVE from 2025: Total Lunar Eclipse
This is presented in celebration of the 96% lunar eclipse last night. Planning, trial and error — photography is all about being there, but then being somewhat experimental. Back in 2025 the weather gods and photographic gods aligned for success.

FRIDAY FAVE from 2010: Watercolour Sky, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario
We are so fortunate in Canada to have access to some incredible natural areas not too far away. Here in Ontario, Algonquin is the biggest draw, but there’s also Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands, Kawartha Highlands, Awenda, Frontenac, Grundy Lake, Bon Echo, Murphy’s Point, The Pinery, Rondeau, Turkey Point . . . the list goes on. But we need to be vigilant — our provincial government has begun selling off parts of provincial parks. Be sure to send a message to your MPP telling them what you think!

It was World Photography Day yesterday, 19 August. On that day in 1839, the French government made the details of Louis Daguerre’s daguerreotype available to the public allowing anyone with the means to begin their photographic journey.
Look ahead to 2027 as it will be celebrated as the 200th anniversary of one of the first photographic images, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce’s in Chalon-sur-Saône in the Burgundy region of France.
To celebrate the day, here is Evening Sunset, Rideau Lakes, Ontario; made yesterday evening.
