To be honest, I haven't spent much time on the Grand Bank Nature Trail in recent years. When I head out for a walk, I usually find myself pulled toward the Cape or down harbour.

However, this past spring, I began walking the trail again through the summer and into the fall. It was a great reminder of what a lovely spot it really is, and seeing how many people in the community use and appreciate it every day makes it all the better.

If you haven't been there before, or haven't been in a while, here's a reminder to get out for a stroll!

SHEDS, STAGES, AND SALTBOXES — 2027 CALENDAR
--------------------------------------------------

Of all the things I love to photograph in Newfoundland, our old sheds, fishing stages, saltbox houses, and other historic structures are among my favourites.

These buildings are an important part of our cultural landscape, and they're often the subjects I find myself drawn to most. Many are slowly disappearing, lost to the ocean, wind, and time. Through my photography, I'm trying to document as many of them as I can while they're still here, preserving a little piece of Newfoundland's history and character along the way.

"Sheds, Stages, and Saltboxes" is a collection of colour photographs celebrating these structures and the unique beauty they bring to our communities.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of my annual Newfoundland photography calendars. To celebrate, I've decided to release two distinct collections rather than my usual mix of Newfoundland scenes. Alongside this calendar, I'll also be releasing "Newfoundlandia", a black-and-white fine art collection that offers a preview of a book I'm currently working on.

Calendars are $25 each, including shipping anywhere in Canada.

NEWFOUNDLANDIA — 2027 CALENDAR

For the past several years, I've put together a calendar featuring photographs from around the Newfoundland, or focused on the Burin Peninsula. This year, I've decided to take things in a slightly different direction.

Similar in ways to 'Americana' or 'Canadiana', 'Newfoundlandia' is a visual homage to the beauty, character and culture that make Newfoundland such a unique place. It's about nostalgia, belonging, and those small, familiar aspects of Newfoundland life which can at times be easy to overlook

The 2027 calendar is the first part of a larger 'Newfoundlandia' project that I've been working on, with more photography and other projects to come.

The photographs in this calendar were made across Newfoundland using a mix of digital, 35mm film, and a vintage 1940s-era medium format film camera. Together, they create a collection that I hope feels familiar, nostalgic and distinctly 'Newfoundland'.

I've put a lot of time and thought into this year's calendar, and I'd really appreciate your support in helping me get this project off the ground.

Point au Gaul

My grandmother's family came from here, and that little thread of family history has always given this place a strange sense of familiarity.

I have no real connection to it, and never have. Yet lately, we find ourselves coming back each summer to spend a slow day together at the beach. I sometimes wonder if she did the same when she was young.

I think that's what I love about photographing places like this. A connection to a place doesn't always have to be your own. Sometimes it can be inherited.

And now, for my kids, it's becoming something of their own.

I don't shoot a lot of portraits anymore.

I've become pretty selective about the sessions I take on. These days, I'm much more likely to say yes when someone brings me an idea that makes me think, yeah... I want to photograph that.

Laura had one of those ideas.

I shot a couple rolls of Kentmere film this summer. A roll of Kentmere 400 in an old 1940s folding camera (Zeiss Ikon Nettar), and a roll of Kentmere 200 in my fav little camera, the Pentax MX.

These photographs are from McCallum, Grand Bank, Point au Gaul, and Port au Bras.

There's something more satisfying about shooting film. It makes you slow down and think about each shot. I also love forgetting what I shot and being surprised when I get them developed.

THE CONNAIGRE

The Connaigre Peninsula was one of the last parts of Newfoundland I hadn't visited. I finally made the trip this summer, exploring Belleoram, Harbour Breton, Seal Cove, and the communities in between.

It's a beautiful, underrated part of the island, and I think it deserves to see a lot more visitors.
