THE CONNAIGRE

The Connaigre Peninsula was one of the last parts of Newfoundland I hadn't visited. I finally made the trip this summer, exploring Belleoram, Harbour Breton, Seal Cove, and the communities in between.

It's a beautiful, underrated part of the island, and I think it deserves to see a lot more visitors.

Deadman's Cove living up to the name.

Arrived at Harbour Breton earlier this summer right as the fog rolled over the cliffs. Cold water, jagged coast, and just enough mist to make the whole cove feel a little cinematic. I could see a Pirate film set here.

Earlier this month, I travelled to the isolated Newfoundland outport of McCallum with my camera.

What I expected to find wasn't the story I came home with.

I've put together a documentary feature called What Remains, combining photographs with the history, people, and quiet beauty of one of Newfoundland's remaining outport communities.

I came home with another.

What Remains is my most ambitious documentary project yet. A collection of photographs and a long-form feature exploring the people, history, and enduring legacy of Newfoundland's outports.

I recently learned that the church in Hr. Mille was torn down. It's always sad to hear of the loss of a building that has been such an important part of a community's story.

This is one of my favourite photographs from 2025. As I drove into town, my eye was immediately drawn down the road toward the church. Something about the scene made me pull over and reach for my camera. Looking back now, I'm glad I did.

For many people, that church wasn't just a building. It was the backdrop for baptisms, weddings, funerals, Sunday mornings, and countless memories shared with family and friends.

I've been hearing people say it's "caplin weather" for the last week or so. You know, those days in Newfoundland in June where temps are cool, and there is a presence of rain, drizzle, and fog.

Well this morning the caplin (as it is traditionally spelled in Newfoundland) began rolling at Admiral's Cove in Grand Bank. These small fish arrive at local beaches this time of year to spawn. They are often followed by seabirds and whales, but they also attract groups of people with dip nets, cast nets, buckets and rubber boots..eager to grab a fresh meal for themselves.
