Our neighbour down the road is a meticulous wood worker. We're so happy he trusted us to burn holes in his newly restored sugar shack! This building is going to live on for generations to come thanks to his careful work.
- hinges installed
- mike making a round hole square
- and the artifact example our neighbour asked us to use as reference for the strap hinge style and scale. He found this on the property!

Burning round holes to be square.
This is part of the process for installing bolt through hinge pintles into a doorframe.
We definitely did some practice burns before the real installation. Figuring out the details like:
- making the burning tool to transition from round to square
- determining the perfect pilot hole size
- wetting the wood to minimize burning
- practicing keeping the tool square so that the pintle pin is perfectly straight up and down.

It happens fast. Much faster than a hammer and chisel. Besides, we're not really wood workers.

5 pairs of HL hinges for Fort Henry in Kingston. 16" x 16". We were very happy to receive this work. Hopefully it's the beginning of more reproduction and restoration work in our future.

Visited this garden fence that we built last year, now that the plants have grown in and around it. We were asked to match the neighbour's fence, and we eagerly agreed once we noticed that all the little C scrolls were held in place with collar and rivet joinery. Also, a couple of window well grates, design inspiration pulled from Otto Schmiler's book, The Smithy's Craft and Tools.

We don't post much these days, but this latest job was just SO much fun I'm compelled to share with you all.
The client built these beautiful stone steps himself, following the curvature of the bedrock as it naturally stepped down through the forest towards the lake. His ask was for us to fasten the railings directly into the bedrock. Luckily only a couple of holes were very deep before we found it. There was a lot of on site work and the last day was a push to finish through thunderstorms and torrential downpours. It was dramatic. Involving all 4 elements, earth, water, air and fire, the ironwork truly feels one with its surroundings.
