Frog Island Photography
Many people have asked me, “Where is Frog Island?” “Who is Frog Island?” “Where did the name originate from?” Let me tell you a little story. Frog Island is a little island- well, maybe a big rock right in the middle of the channel in front of my childhood home on Rainy Lake. It is smack dab in the middle between a large island and the mainland where our house sits. From the mainland, you can walk to Frog Island on a sandbar. When we were little, my sister and I would go to Frog Island to explore. We would always have friends tag along and would go hunting for frogs, minnows, birds, and other exciting things. Dusk was the best time to catch frogs, and there were always plenty of them. Our friends, my sister and I could often be seen with a net, a pail and a spade. We caught so many creatures, but we always released them back into nature. We didn’t want to hurt or injure what we caught. I can’t remember when the big rock got the name Frog Island, but I know that when we were young, that is what we called it, and the name just stuck.
It was difficult thinking of a name for my little business. My parents and I brainstormed and came up with a few contenders, but we really liked the name Frog Island Photography because it reminded me of all the adventures that took place on the big rock in the middle of our channel. It was catchy, unique and stood out from the rest on the list. I wanted to showcase the nature that surrounds us, which we often take for granted. I wanted to show the beauty of our little piece of paradise. There are so many beautiful places in our world, and Frog Island is just one of many, but to me it’s my whole world. I am so lucky to have been born in a place where catching frogs, skipping stones, watching the sun rise and set, seeing the northern lights and counting shooting stars is just an ordinary day. Rainy Lake and Frog Island allowed me to experience what many people living in cities never get to experience. I was born a country girl, as the saying goes. You can’t take the country out of the country girl. Well, technically a lakeside girl in my case.
