This 5-inch tall carving is represents a Sandhill Crane. This big bird is very common to this area in the spring and fall on their journey to and from their breeding ground 100 miles to the north east of here in the interlake area all the way north west to Wood Buffalo Park in northern Alberta.

A mature crane has a wing span of around 7 feet, the bird stands nearly 4 feet tall. They attract a lot of attention in the breeding season for their mating dance which is a very showey affair. Their food consists mainly of smaller fish and insects to frogs and grain.

Carved from basswood, painted with acrylics and has copper legs; finished in 2023 spring.

Donated recently to Canada Post here in Erickson, MB for their annual fundraiser. So if you want to take home this bird, get your raffle tickets before the draw date on the 5th of June, 2023.

Father Christmas 03...
This carving, as well as most of the rest of the same type I have carved, is done in a native wood here called White Poplar, a type of Quaking Aspen that grows in dryer areas. Normally I carved most when the moisture content was down to around 25%. Also, I hollowed up from the bottom to the mid chest area to slow down the checking of the log. Actually, good wood to carve but has a tendency to fuse up with sanding. I have created well over 200 of these Christmas ornaments and they are currently all around the world on shelves. Oil paint on most.

Autumn Colours.... the tree looks like Birch, which has the yellow leaves the red leaves belong to a Mountain ash tree, I think.

King Fisher...this little wooden bird has been a goal of mine for quite a few years. Try as I might, every picture I get of this bird is so far away I could say it was a flea or an eagle, and no-one would be any wiser,. aprox. 4 to 5 inches tall in basswood; paint is acrylic.

Fuchsia Flower...
This flower was in just the right place early in the morning for a photo shoot. The sunlight was streaming through a break in the foliage just enough to allow me to capture the half shadow on the antler head of the stamen.

Horse...
This little horse was carved in a wood block purchased at Windsor Wood Supply from a box of samples. The wood was called imbuda. The wood was hard, but workable with knives and chisels and I didn't have power tools so this was the end product and I didn't purchase any more. I wore a dust mask while finishing the piece but quickly found the dust and my body didn't like one another, so that was the last of that wood. The horse now lives in a different province with a nice family.
Oil and wax finish. Base is acrylic paint on spruce. 5 inches tall, carved in the mid 1990's

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak....
One of a few that were spring visitors through our yard. Not always camera shy but hard to get good photos for any one of many reasons. This male decided he would stand back and watch his mate feed first, and observe the traffic from a distance.

Gargoyle #2
This carving, in Butternut, is a copy of a Fred Cogelow carving I saw at a show at the station in Duluth MN. The show was all Fred Cogelow carvings and certainly worth the visit.
Sadly I cannot come close to the grace and beauty of Fred's carving skills but that doesn’t stop me from trying. I have since that time done at least 6 of these gargoyles of different sizes from 6 inches tall to 22 inches tall in basswood, butternut and walnut.
Most of these carvings. Including this one are finished with a natural oil finish topped with a satin wax finish.
