October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and this year, I have even more reason to celebrate the incredible people who have inspired me.
This summer, I had the absolute joy of photographing 51 incredible individuals for a very special project. Together, we created a collection of simple black-and-white portraits that will become part of the 2027 calendar supporting the Waterloo Wellington Down Syndrome Society.
The theme this year is Beyond Expectations.And after spending time with these incredible individuals, I can tell you that the theme means so much more than words on a page.It’s a reminder that we are often capable of far more than the expectations others place on us and that the only limits we should accept are the ones we place on ourselves.
As a photographer and storyteller, I’m incredibly grateful to have been trusted to capture these moments. But the photographs are only a small part of the story.The real story is the people in front of the camera. Their personalities.
Their confidence. Their individuality. Their joy. Their determination.These are the stories worth telling.
The 2027 Beyond Expectations calendar will be available for purchase locally and online, with proceeds supporting the Waterloo Wellington Down Syndrome Society and the incredible work they do in our community.
I hope you’ll consider supporting the calendar but more importantly, I hope you’ll take a moment to look beyond expectations and see the possibilities.Because expectations should never define what someone can become.
