for 'what we carry'
❥ a black cross. at least, that's what it looks like — until the light hits it and it turns crystal blue.
i've always loved black. it's what i reach for, what i hide behind, what feels most like me. but this pendant holds a second self, one that only shows under light. the part i don't lead with. the part most people never see.
my mom and i found it years ago — the first thing we ever picked out together, the first time we stood in the same place, looked at the same thing, and agreed. we left the trade show without it, but neither of us forgot.
two years later, i was packing up to leave home for the city for the first time. that's when she surprised me with it. she'd remembered the whole time. no speech, no long goodbye — just the one thing we ever agreed on, pressed into my hands like a lucky charm.
now it moves wherever i move. every new address, every unfamiliar room, it's the piece of home that comes with me — proof that someone who knew me before the city still sees both versions: the black, and the blue underneath.
and that's the thing about black — it doesn't always mean darkness or hopelessness. with the right light, the right people, the right community around you, it can blossom into its true colour. mine just happens to be crystal blue.
what we carry may look ordinary. mine looks like a black cross. but hold it to the light.
