For as long as I can remember, I've loved hearing people's stories.
Not the polished version you'd read on a website or hear in a commercial, but the real ones. The stories about taking a chance, building something from nothing, overcoming setbacks, and finding purpose in what you do.
That's why I created The Perch.
The Perch is a storytelling project dedicated to highlighting the people behind our local businesses. Through portraits, video, and honest conversations, I want to shine a light on the entrepreneurs, creators, and community builders who make our city what it is.
The name itself is personal.
Growing up, my grandparents had a front porch where family, friends, and neighbours would gather. It was a place where conversations happened naturally, where people slowed down and simply enjoyed each other's company. As a kid, I couldn't pronounce "porch," so I called it "The Perch." The name stuck, and years later it felt like the perfect fit for a project built around conversation and connection.
This isn't about marketing a business or promoting a product.
It's about the people.
It's about understanding what inspired someone to take the leap, the challenges they've faced, the lessons they've learned, and what continues to drive them every day.
One of my favourite parts of this project is that every person I interview nominates the next business owner they believe has a story worth sharing. My hope is that The Perch grows through the community itself, one conversation at a time.
Our first two stories are already posted on the new instagram (https://www.instagram.com/theperch.edmonton/), and I can't wait to introduce you to more incredible people.
Pull up a chair. Welcome to The Perch.
