Some photo sessions are planned weeks in advance...

Others happen because the heart says, do it now...

Peanut is 13 years old, and lately he has not been feeling quite like himself. His future feels a little uncertain, so yesterday we dropped everything and created a small, quiet session for him and his person, my dear friend Shandra-lee Grace

Shandra-Lee is not only our neighbour across the road, she is also such an important part of life here at the farm and River’s Edge. She is always helping, always showing up, and always loving the animals as though they were her own. Creating these photographs for her felt like one small way to return some of that love.

The timing also felt strangely perfect. Just a few days earlier, I found this beautiful antique wooden stroller at the market. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to bring it home. And when I thought about who should be the very first model to test it out, there was really only one answer.

Peanut.

Naturally, he was completely perfect. Tiny, dignified, slightly fluffy, and looking as though antique stroller modelling had been his profession all along. 🤍

One of the photographs from the session held another little surprise. Beside Shandra-Lee and Peanut appeared a beautiful ball of light, shaped almost like a tiny angel with wings. I did not place it there, and I cannot explain it, but I love the thought that perhaps they had a little extra company watching over them.

These images are not meant to be sad...

They are a celebration of Peanut exactly as he is right now: deeply loved, wonderfully spoiled, and still very much the handsome little gentleman at the center of Shandra-Lee’s world.

The most important photographs are the ones we make while we still can.

Ten years ago, I photographed my very first litter of Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppies for this breeder.

One of those puppies went home to a family with two little girls, and I had the chance to photograph each of them cuddling their brand-new puppy. They were tiny, the puppy was tiny, and the whole thing was almost unbearably adorable.

Fast-forward ten years…

Those same two girls, now all grown up, came back to welcome a new puppy into their lives!

And somehow, I found myself standing behind the camera again, photographing the same girls with a new generation of puppies.

There is something so special about photographs that grow more meaningful with time. At first, they are simply a sweet moment. Then suddenly, a decade has passed, the children have become women, another puppy is tucked into their arms, and the images have become part of a much bigger story.

I have been photographing these puppies for ten years now, and seeing these girls return felt like watching a little circle close in the loveliest possible way.

Same breeder.
Same family.
A new puppy.
Ten years of memories between the photographs. ❤️🐾

Apparently this litter decided to throw a party… and everyone was invited. 🎈🐾

A whole row of Nova Scotia Duck Tollers, tucked in among presents and balloons, with two very proud parents keeping watch from either end.

After nearly ten years of photographing litters for this breeder, it’s still such a joy to watch each new group of puppies grow into their own little personalities. Some bold, some thoughtful, some more interested in the party decorations than the camera… but all completely adorable.

This “party litter” may have been a little outside my usual earthy comfort zone, but I have to admit… they wore it well. ❤️

Sneak peek! ❤️

I spent yesterday surrounded by another beautiful litter of Nova Scotia Duck Tollers... and this little one was more than happy to pose among the flowers.

Those eyes... that tiny nose... and just enough puppy fluff to melt even the toughest heart!

I can't wait to share more from this session!

Yesterday's forecast was apparently written by a committee.

I left home in 32°C sunshine, drove through wind that had me keeping a close eye on the trees, arrived in the rain, and then spent the rest of the session watching the sun and clouds play an enthusiastic game of hide-and-seek.

Thankfully, we found the perfect shady spot in the field and let the clouds do what they do best.

And these puppies? Absolute rock stars.

Nine German Shepherd puppies, nine big personalities, countless oversized paws, and enough cuteness to make me forget all about my ever-growing to-do list.

These puppies were an absolute dream to photograph. Smart, sweet, curious, and so well behaved that they made my job look easy.

I'm pretty sure puppy therapy should be tax deductible...

Yesterday's German Shepherd puppy session was a reminder that Mother Nature loves to keep photographers guessing.

I left home in shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals under clear blue skies and 32°C sunshine. Half an hour later, I was driving through wind so strong I was starting to wonder if a tree might decide to join me on the highway. By the time I arrived, after a one hour drive, it was raining.

And of course... I hadn't brought a sweater. 😆

Thankfully, the rain didn't stay long. The clouds hung around just enough to give us beautiful soft light, the puppies were absolute stars, and the whole session came together perfectly.

Nine adorable German Shepherd puppies, wonderful people, and a few hours spent forgetting about deadlines and to-do lists.

Honestly, it was exactly what my busy little soul needed.

I haven't shared many photos of Pixel lately...

Not because she hasn't been around, but because she is always around.

While I rush off to photograph bears, foxes, puppies, goats, horses, and all the other creatures that seem to find their way in front of my camera, Pixel is usually right there beside me.

My shadow.

My adventure buddy.

My little muse.

She has walked countless trails, supervised endless photo sessions, helped with chores, greeted guests, and accompanied me through more adventures than I can count.

Today, the lupins were in bloom, and for once I turned the camera back toward the little dog who is so often behind the scenes.
Life gets busy, and sometimes we forget to photograph the ones we see every day.

We need to remember that the most important stories are the ones that have been quietly (or in Pixel's case loudly 😛) beside us all along. 💜🐾

A few more images from our recent puppy session with KD Pomskies in Creston! These three were so freaking cute, all go, all the time, but we managed to get them all in the box at the same time. Also here are Mom, and Dad, such lovely dogs!

Every great wildlife adventure begins with... puppies???
Before the bears, before the moose, before the fox kits and bison and all the excitement of Lightchasers Nature Photography Conferences, we made a stop in Creston to photograph these three adorable Pomsky puppies and their parents.
A Pomsky is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, which somehow results in tiny wolves disguised as living stuffed animals.
As luck would have it, the puppies were just the right age, we were passing through at just the right time, and everything came together perfectly.
Looking back, it was the perfect way to start what would become one of the most wildlife-filled weeks I've had in a long time.
And really... who wouldn't want to begin an adventure with puppies?
