Travelling down memory lane…It was the summer of 2023, and travelling down the Lyndoch Hill on my way to the 14th Concession. I was travelling down a road that as a kid I travelled often. I was heading to my childhood stomping ground where it all started. The farm with the big house that has 21 rooms, and a beautiful red barn. I took my dad’s chair back to the farm. It was the summer of 1991, that I took that chair from the sunporch. Here I was in 2023, bringing the chair back for the first time to where it all started. As I drove into the driveway and up the path to the red barn I was confronted with a big empty space. My heart sank. I got out and walk around the area where the barn had been. The dirt path that we drove our bikes down to the pond was gone. The crop was growing up in that dirt path. There was no dirt path anymore. Seeing these changes made me sad. After taking sometime looking around, I took a deep breath and got busy shooting. After all, it was an old farm landscape with buildings and crops. I took away many pictures, and I haven’t been back. This canvas photo represents my childhood. This crop is why my dad’s parents immigrated from Belgium to Canada in 1927. Farming to***co was my dad’s job, and his dad’s job. They made a modest living farming in Norfolk County, while raising a large family. At 18, I was the only kid who left to go to post secondary school. I was going to live a different life than my parents. Little did I know that my own life’s journey with a chair riding shotgun would bring me back to where it all began.
